  1. 1,053. Buddy Baumann
  2. batmagadanleadoff wrote: He had a tiny ONE percent stake in the Mets Five percent, I believe. It took several decades for my goodwill toward Mets owners for simply not being deRoulet (or Steinbrenner) to completely wear away, so I understand the impulse toward vestigial gratitude. It may not be operative at this stage of the franchise's development, but I get it in a vacuum.
  3. With Jerry Blevins on paternity leave, Paul Sewald becomes the Mets' reigning active roster iron man, having held his spot without interruption since May 1, 2017. Wilmer Flores was activated from the DL two days later and hasn't been off the roster since, though he was out most of September last year when he fouled a ball off his face, but space allowed him to stick around on paper. We're 39 games in and only 13 Mets from Opening Day haven't budged.
  4. Benjamin Grimm wrote: The Mets' 40-man roster doesn't seem to have the proper balance of positions, does it? One of my companions at last night's game noted the Mets started four shortstops around the infield.
  5. Mr. Evans is your starting left fielder this soggy afternoon.
  6. Our guys? These guys: Juan Lagares – CF Asdrúbal Cabrera – 2B Wilmer Flores – 1B Michael Conforto – RF Phil Evans – LF Luis Guillorme – 3B Jose Lobaton – C Zack Wheeler – RHP Amed Rosario – SS
  7. Yoenis's injury is finally officially acknowledged. Phil Evans to return.
  8. I recommend surprise first pitches of 8:36 PM. Very mellow mood at the damp ballpark. Loosened up the bats.
  9. Benjamin Grimm wrote: The 1999 cover was the last surviving entry from the 1990s, making that the first decade to be eliminated from this competition. The decade the Mets let Old Timers Day and Banner Day wither and die. Seems apropos that the yearbooks wouldn't keep up with their predecessors.

  11. Frank Quilici, Twins infielder, coach, manager, broadcaster and guy whose card I got a lot in second grade, 79.
  12. The pitching coach on his Opening Day pitcher and at least co-ace Noah Syndergaard, per the Post's Mike Puma: " He's spent, what, 2 1/2 years in the big leagues? So I don't know where all the expectations came from, I wasn't here for all that, but he [has] yet to do a whole lot at the major league level."
  13. I made one game per series at Shea. I missed the 2015 Pan North American games at Citi. I thought about going to keep the streak going (and to greet Jose) but it didn't work out. I will be there to say hi to Grandy Tuesday night.
  14. batmagadanleadoff wrote: I saw Rey Ordonez homer against the Jays at Shea. In my mind, the HR was against Roger Clemens, but I looked it up and Clemens came out the inning before. I watched Rey's HR from that primitive by today's standards, right field corner field level food court where a frozen Digiorno mini pizza pie was about as good as it got. That was my 1997 Jays game. Loved that there was still ill will for Clemens eleven years after the '86 World Series with not an MFY pinstripe in sight.
  15. Dr. Ron Taylor, the former Mets pitcher who is now the Blue Jays' team physician, took the X-rays. Taylor said there was a severe sprain and that Jones would be out one to two weeks and then take it one day at a time. Jones, however, rejoined the club in time for the flight to Chicago. Guessing not too many other team physicians would be namechecked by the New York Times unless that team physician was the ace reliever on the local/opposing team's most recent world champion. Either way, nice of Taylor to look after one of his Met successors.
  16. Go 1-0 tomorrow night, that's what.
  17. It was the "and home" portion of the "home and home" series with the Jays that caused havoc on the eve of the second half of '81, as Randy Jones and Tom Hausman each came up lame after pitching on the slick Exhibition Stadium mound. Jones's injury was more attributable to the uncovered conditions. I was also at Shea for the Saturday afternoon preseason game the Mets and Jays played in 1991, featuring a warm ovation for the visiting Mookie Wilson. I have to believe that the universe of not paid to be there people who witnessed the Jays alight at Shea in 1981, 1991, 1997, 1999 and 2001 is me and can't be too many others.
  18. Mets have never lost a regular-season home game to the Blue Jays, though I did seem them drop a pre-second season exhibition to the visiting Torontonians in August of 1981.

He was active for a game that never started Saturday. If he never returns, he probably rates his own category. You're probably rooting for that so you could write it up. Weird. Just when you think you've seen it all. It would actually bother me into Mets eternity if he doesn't come back and pitch. Never seems right when a Met is so close to happening yet never happens.

  21. bmfc1 wrote: Baumann is returned to AAA even though he would be more likely to be used today than Vargas. Since Vargas is being "skipped" in the rotation (skipping is fun so it's such a nice way of saying "ignored due to a failure to perform at a major league level") and there are two days off this week, can't they find some reason to put him on the 10-day DL? Really not a bad idea. Let him hang around and throw simulated games under the watchful eye of the brain trust -- or the watchful brain of the eye trust.
  22. Almost forgot Jake had to be activated. And he was, at the expense of not yet an official Met Buddy Baumann. Ah revoir, No. 77. We'll hardly know ye until Mrs. Blevins is reporting contractions.
  23. I bought this year's because I buy every year's (plus it would have been weird not to have procured it considering the case of yearbook fever I've contracted from our tournament). There was nothing in the 2018 edition that, if I was deprived of it, would make me a less knowledgeable or enthusiastic Mets fan, but I would miss knowing I have it. Page 232 memorializes Ed Charles with same graphic they posted on Twitter when he died. I'm guessing they dropped a house ad to accommodate it.
