  1. That was fun! I realize that's obvious, but how often does one get to say it this season? I could see Olbermann, with the right partner (singular) to bounce off and better direction in general, being a pretty decent listen. They didn't really lose me until the bottom of the ninth when, amid a save situation, it was decided now was the time to explore KO's memorabilia collection. Do that stuff in the fourth inning.
  2. Rosario SS Nimmo RF Conforto LF Flores 1B McNeil 2B Frazier 3B Jackson CF Bautista Position That Shouldn't Exist Mesoraco C Jake pitches, dominates.
  3. Get me to 55 and I'll be satisfied. Fifty-Four in Sixty-Seven is that rare Mets record I've been conscious of seemingly my entire fan that's never been broken, right there with 40-120 and 25-7. I don't expect the latter to fall and lord help us if we ever approach the former. (I should throw in the eleven-game winning streak, but at least it's been tied multiple times since it became enshrined as unbreakable.)

A few weeks ago I saw Texas used 60 players in 2014, at that point the MLB record. Ah, what I found when I was searching was from the night the Rangers reached No. 60. It was they who used 64.

Needs to play to be No. 53, but the good news is the record is 54, so if Jack gets in a game, all we will need is one of the following to tie and two to surpass: • The return of T.J. Rivera • The return of Gavin Cecchini • The promotion of Peter Alonso • The return of David Wright Or a couple more Jack Reinheimers from out of nowhere. I think we've got a shot at history. Eat your heart out, 1967!

  9. Anarchy and Chaos are indeed reigning, and not for the worse. No set closer, no noticeable repercussions thus far. Since Familia was traded, Swarzak's saved two, Gsellman, Blevins and now Lugo one.
  10. This feature is always welcome.

Four previous rainouts were made up amid a succeeding set (2000, 2003, 2008, each two-stadium ordeals) or day-nighted into an ongoing set (2004).
  12. I wonder if they made David ride the bus from St. Lucie to Clearwater, which itself would be a test of his back. He said he was "all smiles" while clearly stonefaced.
  13. If the Mets wanted to slip David Wright into a game in Florida where nobody would be watching too closely, this one would have done the trick.
  14. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Keeping Alonso in the minors until next May 1 would be more beneficial for the long-term future than having him accrue service time playing meaningless games this month and next. I support not promoting him. Peter Alonso should only be good enough that his arbitration and free agent status becomes an issue years down the road. Manipulating young players' progress to limit the club's obligation at the expense of their potential development does not inform an inspirational rallying cry for diehard fans. The Mets held Ike Davis back in 2010 so he wouldn't be a free agent until after the 2016 season. The Mets held Matt Harvey back in 2012 so he wouldn't be a free agent until after the 2018 season. The foresight was amazing -- and futile. If Alonso is really judged not ready to take swings against major league pitching and get his feet comparably wet at first base in September, that's fine. But as long as rosters still stretch in September, and this guy has driven in more than a hundred runs in the minors, I can't see choosing loopholes over at-bats.
  15. Could be we've found a winning formula: playing a crappier team than us in an emptier stadium than ours. If so, let's chase that feeling. The pitching matchup tonight will model the battles sure to be taking place in schoolyards from New York to Miami all day today. "I'm gonna be Corey Oswalt! I've pitched decently, if in hard luck!" "Well, I'm gonna be Dan Straily! My ERA is closer to four than it is to five!" "We're on pace to finish slightly ahead of your sorry butts!" "Oh yeah? We project to qualify for a somewhat higher draft pick!" "Our new GM might position us to contend -- and he could do it with fewer analytics than the contemporary industry standard!" "We already have a GM! And he just got rid of one of our last recognizable players!" Ah, kids and the national pastime. Same as it ever was, I'm sure.
  16. It's almost too quiet at Marlins Park tonight.
  17. Two games separate the fifth-place Marlins from the fourth-place Mets. The stakes as this three-game weekend series begin couldn't be less compelling. Zack Wheeler will continue to build his case as the best second-half pitcher in the league. Jose Ureña will appreciate that I bothered with the tilde. First pitch is when can you get there?
  18. Scored EIGHT. Won by EIGHT. Win for number forty EIGHT.
  19. Hot day, stressful innings. But god help the relievers who blow this one.
  20. Here's hoping deGrom will find a treasure trove of runs and won't be left on an island.

  22. DeGrom pitches in daylight at home. If that's not worth something, I don't know what is. Robert Stephenson makes his season debut for Cincinnati. Let's make it a Vargas one for him.
  23. Luis Gonzalez, Diamondbacks.
