  1. 1,064. Bobby Wahl
  2. Kevin Kaczmarski DFA'd to make room for Bobby Wahl on the 40-man...is a sentence that would have had no meaning not that long ago, but now it describes a current Met roster situation. Marcos Molina, no longer in the Mets system, has been suspended by MLB for PED use. Matz not on DL, but that seems his destination, given his mild flexor pronator strain. Matz is one of five Mets on the active 25 since Opening Day (Rosario, Reyes, Lugo and Gsellman are the others).
  3. Nimmo CF Bautista RF Conforto LF Flores 1B Frazier 3B McNeil 2B Plawecki C Reyes SS Vargas P
  4. Frazier activated, Evans to DL (broken leg but reportedly not a terrible one -- easy to say when it's not yours). Wahl up and wearing 61, Rhame to Vegas.

DAMMIT JOSE WE'RE TRYING TO GET YOU RELEASED HERE CUT IT THE HELL OUT That's so early June. If he's not gone from this team on August 1, he won't be gone before October 1. In fact, I'd guess a whole other Jose Reyes countdown is on. Twenty... Nineteen... Jose Reyes, 2019 Met.
  6. Impressive condimenting, indeed.
  7. In America, deGrom pitch very well, get no run support. In Russia, nobody get anything for anything.
  8. In America, you hear 'hot dog!' at ballgame and you decide you want one. In Russia, you hear cold dog coming after you in Siberia and he decide he want you.
  9. In America, relief pitcher take little car from bullpen to mound. In Russia, little car take relief pitcher from mound to Siberia.
  10. In America, pitcher who give up runs is sent to showers. In Russia, pitcher who give up runs is sent to Siberia.

  12. Worth noting that on the day Lewis died, the Mets won by a score of 1-0 for the first time in more than two years. Their previous 1-0 victory was won on the road in extra innings on the strength of a home run (Kelly Johnson's), only the third time in Mets history they had accomplished such a feat. The time before that came in 1985, the Darryl Strawberry home run off the clock game in St. Louis. And the time before that? The Johnny Lewis-Jim Maloney game.
  13. Gary Cohen announced yesterday (as did the Cardinal broadcast) that Johnny Lewis died Sunday at age 78. Johnny carved a piece of Mets lore for himself by homering off Jim Maloney in the eleventh inning on June 14, 1965, breaking up a no-hitter. Maloney would complete the game with 18 strikeouts. Lewis completed it with the game-winning RBI as the Mets improbably prevailed, 1-0. Johnny went deep 15 times for the 1965 Mets and socked five more in '66. 1967 would be his last year with the club and in the majors.
  14. Tony Cloninger, 77, best known as the pitcher who hit two grand slams in one game. He did it for the Braves in 1966. Less known for my confusing him with Tony Conigliaro when I was very young.
  15. The day after Cabrera: Rosario SS Nimmo CF Flores 1B Conforto LF Bautista RF McNeil 2B Mesoraco C Evans 3B World's Greatest Pitcher P Batting the pitcher eighth seems to have gone the way of Asdrubal. Callaway hasn't done it since June 19 in Colorado.
  16. That eleventh-inning home run, of course, September 22, 2016, the keynote blow amid a late playoff rush that was as dramatic as any the Mets have forged since 1973 (failure to advance beyond the Wild Card Game notwithstanding). Judging by how often the clip was played in the wake of the news of the trade, you'd think it was stroked by Bobby Thomson off Ralph Branca. Also launched a homer to beat the very same Phillies he'd beaten the season before on the 2017 Bobblehead Day that celebrated his instantly iconic blast. Fifty-five home runs in all. Thirty at Citi Field, tying him for sixth among Mets, with Ike Davis. Reminded me of Gary Carter in terms of persevering through aches and pains. I don't know if they taped his knees mummy-style, but he was always said to be hurting yet hardly ever came out of the lineup. A real gamer who was a joy to root for. Faith and Fear's Most Valuable Met of 2016 and as close to a mainstay as the Mets had from the moment he arrived to the moment he departed. He came off the DL in June of 2017, stated his desire to be traded if he was played at second instead of short and then proceeded to a) play wherever asked without further public protest; and maintain the longest uninterrupted stretch of any Met on the active roster. (That distinction now belongs to wily veteran Amed Rosario, dating to August 1, 2017.)
  17. 1,063. Austin Jackson
  18. Official: Austin Jackson is a Met, Matt den Dekker is DFA'd.
  19. Jackson is signed, will wear No. 16, made legendary by Kevin Kaczmarski.
  20. Corey Oswalt, who's pitched very well, has been sent down to clear space for Jason Vargas, who hasn't.
  21. Tonight's will be the Mets' 100th game of the 2018 season. If the Mets win, they will have the same record after 100 games as the 1978 and 1979* Mets. If the Mets lose, they will have the same record after 100 games as the 1977* and 2003 Mets. Either way, not the most flattering of company. (The 1977 and 1979 asterisks take into account suspended games from earlier in the schedule that weren't made up until later in the season -- record stated here reflects what the standings said after 100 games in those respective seasons had been played to completion.) Mets clubs the 2018 Mets will have a better record than after 100 games: 1995 (41-59 but rising); 1967 (39-61); 1983 (37-63, yet on the cusp of a perception-shifting surge); 1993 (35-65, after a late-July burst of competence); 1963 and 1965 (both 32-68); 1964 (30-70) and 1962 (26-74). The 1981 Mets' combined record after 100 games was 40-60, but also irrelevant in real time in light of the split season. 1986 leads the 100-game pack at 68-32, eight games better than runner-up 1988 (60-40). Several 59-41 outfits follow: 1984, 1985, 1990, 1999 and 2006. Shockingly satisfying 1997 and eventually disappointing 2007 are next at 57-43. Then you get 1969 at 56-44, a record to be matched 31 years later by another World Series participant, the 2000 Mets. Other playoff Mets clubs-to-be after 100 games: 2016 at 53-47; 2015 at 52-48 and the patron saint of lost causes, 1973, at 44-56. Best 100-game record by a Mets team that would end with a losing record? That would be the spiraling 1991 Mets, down to 55-45 at this stage of the schedule, en route to a woeful 77-84 (from a high of 53-38). Twenty-six Mets teams were above .500 after 100 games, 29 below it (30, if you wish to count 1981). The only literal 50-50 proposition in Mets history? Terry Collins's inaugural edition of 2011.
  22. Erstwhile coveted Oakland Athletic minor leaguer Will Toffey is now the No. 24-ranked prospect in the Mets system, according to MLB Pipeline. For comparison's sake, toast of New York Jeff McNeil is ranked No. 19, yesterday's winning pitcher Corey Oswalt is No. 14 and the top pick time forgot, Gavin Cecchini, is No. 18. So who the hell knows?
  23. New MLB Pipeline rankings place Justin Dunn as MLB's No. 100 prospect overall, No. 4 among Mets. Others from the organization to get noticed: Andres Giminez at No. 60, Peter Alonso at No. 65 and this year's top Mets draft choice Jarred Kelenic at No. 69.
  24. Centerfield wrote: Kudos to those guys for trying. Si.
  25. Cespedes, in his press conference listened to questions in English, answered them in Spanish, from which they were interpreted. Rosario, in his postgame radio interview, listened to Wayne Randazzo's questions interpreted into Spanish, answered them in English. Whatever works, amigos.
