  5. WOR bracketed the "official" pre and post, which was hosted by Wayne Randazzo (who I hope remains part of the crew), with Pete's shows. It created a nice buffer on either side against standard 710 fare, which was odious before a Mets game and deadly dull after, depending on the daypart. WCBS might not feel compelled to do as much. A half-hour pre and however long the post goes might be it, then back to the news. Can't stress enough how good Pete has been. He's one of us, in the fan sense, but a professional all the way through. Nothing gimmicky, talked like an intelligent person, handled callers with respect, didn't suffer fools gladly, never came off as a company man, well-prepared always. In the baseball radio matrix, he was an essential part of the season. Licata co-hosted occasionally and sat in on off nights. He became tolerable after a while.
  6. Pete McCarthy and Sal Licata each tweeted the forthcoming demise of the WOR Sports Zone in light of WOR no longer having the Mets anchoring their sports programming. McCarthy has been really good in his pregame and postgame role since 2014, comparable to Howie Rose at the birth of Mets Extra. Listeners would be well-served if he travels with the Mets to WCBS as well, though CBS having other non-Mets commitments puts that in question.

Rosario SS McNeil 2B Flores 1B Conforto LF Frazier 3B Bruce Position That's Bullshit Nimmo RF Plawecki C Jackson CF The Mets won't be using their most reliable hitter, Jacob deGrom, except to pitch against Chris Sale. 8. Friday night an SNY camera picked up DEFRANCESCO 11 on the back of someone who I presume is Las Vegas manager Tony DeFrancesco, man without a country at the moment given the Triple-A transition. I haven't seen any note or heard any mention of him getting a September appointment to the coaching staff, but there he apparently was.
  9. Paul Sewald now at 0-12 on his big league career. Worst winless hole in MLB history? Terry Felton: Where Sewald fears to tread. Or would if he'd ever heard of him. Paul at 0-12 matches Bob L. Miller's 1962 and therefore Mets career launch (though he had pitched in the majors prior). Miller got off the schneid on the penultimate day of the inaugural season, defeating the Cubs in Chicago, 2-1. After being worn down by mounting questions regarding what it was like to always lose, Miller relished the chance to enter the clubhouse and greet reporters with hot takes on what it was like to finally win. Alas, none of the beat men traveled with the team on that last pit stop; they had all been dispatched by their editors to catch up with the Dodgers and Giants, who were battling for the pennant. Should Sewald finally be in a mood to talk, chances are somebody named Tim will be around to take down his thoughts.

  11. Vintage Jake for another vintage month. Zack getting the feel for what it was like to be Koosman or Matlack. (Thanks BG!)
  12. I just wanna put this uniform on again.
  13. Howie Rose mentioned, while helping Pete McCarthy fill time during the rain delay Wednesday, that Tim Hamilton died on the same day Jay Horwitz got his new role. Howie described Hamilton as having Jay's job before Jay (though the PR director of record prior to Jay was Arthur Richman). Here's the AP account: Horwitz’s first assistant with the Mets, Tim Hamilton, died Wednesday. Hamilton predated Horwitz with New York, and Horwitz told The Associated Press that Hamilton was a “great guy” who helped acclimate him to life at Shea Stadium. Hamilton’s ex-wife, Lorraine Hamilton, is still the Mets’ executive director of broadcasting and events. UMDB lists Tim Hamilton as promotion director from 1983 to 1985.
  14. Given that he was considered to be tight with management for a beat writer/columnist, I always thought Noble might land such a role if he wanted it, independent of any alumni relations. He is a vital link in the institutional memory chain between Jack Lang and Adam Rubin, overlapping with both (obviously there are others, still with us and otherwise, but those three covered just about the entirety of the first 55 years of the franchise). His postmortem on the life of Rusty Staub is essential reading. Marty knows where the bodies are buried. I like to dig up what's buried in the box scores.
  15. It was the most Met-studded gathering of team legends since Shea Goodbye for Jay Goodbye at Citi Field for the announcement, stretching back to Kranepool and Torre all the way to deGrom and Conforto. Horwitz's official title is Vice President, Alumni Public Relations and Team Historian. The former role certainly couldn't hurt and the latter is long overdue.

  17. Give Jay's reputation as a world-class butt-dialer, paper may be his best bet.

  21. James Wagner of NYT reports via Twitter: The Mets announce that P.R. mainstay Jay Horwitz, who has worked there for 39 years, will take on a new unspecified role with the team. They will hold a press conference with him, Jeff Wilpon, front office officials and former and current players tomorrow afternoon.
  22. Rainout tonight. Single-admission doubleheader (the only kind worth calling a doubleheader) on Wednesday. Jake goes Tuesday, pending the skies and all that. Fun fact: "Rhys Hoskins" is Dutch translation for "Rosh Hashanah".
