  2. You know, the significance of Matt Harvey's departure (and perhaps his overall tenure) may have been a wee bit overstated by the tabloids. After a while, he seemed to exist more for the sake of front and back page puns than to pitch.
  3. Also excellent: Ohtani won in the AL, meaning some MFY didn't.
  4. Jeff McNeil finishes tied for sixth in NL Rookie of the Year voting, garnering a single third-place vote and finishing with one point. Hats off to Jack McCaffery of the Delaware County Daily Times, who was clearly paying attention as J-Mac tore apart Phillies pitching in August and September. Oh, and some Brave won the award.
  5. In retrospect, that was the week that was. Flores HR: We're bulletproof! Blown game: We're doomed. Comeback vs Nats: We're gonna be fine after all. Shortly after which, the competitive portion of the season deflated sans ceremony.
  6. Love the design of the News's Rusty back page, but the headline is cheesy and non-specific. They could have hauled it out for any player's passing. Facebook back page is most clever I've seen to date, and relevant to how most fans experienced (or didn't experience) that game.
  7. Keith's chance to be reconsidered will come in a future ballot covering players who played mostly between 1970 and 1987. Will Clark is in whatever they define as the modern day.
  8. Weird to be reminded Matt Harvey/The Dark Knight was still a thing in 2018.
  9. THUMB ON DOWN for best pun; I FEEL YOUR PAIN for best elbow to the ribs of the subject; GO TO HALL, LARRY! for best historical awareness. I didn't become the biggest Todd Frazier fan going in the course of the season, but I am happy to be reminded how quickly all that thumbs-down stuff faded, perhaps because the Salt 'n' Pepper thing briefly took off.
  10. Jeremy Reed is your new Los Angeles Angels hitting coach.
  11. Got his first hit in the Mets' 16-run onslaught in Baltimore. Played an inadequate left field in Philadelphia. Got picked off as a pinch-runner in Boston. An interesting player from an Acela standpoint.
  12. Gil Hodges implemented a four-man outfield to cut down McCovey's extra-base power in the thirteenth inning of a scoreless game at Shea, a move that paid off perfectly on August 19, 1969, when Willie hit one to deepest left center and Cleon Jones was in position to run it down and make a backhanded catch. Tommie Agee homered to win it, 1-0, in the bottom of the fourteenth. The losing pitcher was Juan Marichal, who had gone the distance. Giants in those days.
  13. Five months minus a day...
  14. And now, the end is near... Nine innings may be all that's left. No more than twenty-seven, pending any more Game Three-like lunacy. No matter which side one has temporarily aligned with, sigh.
  15. Say, that was something.
  16. Ari Gold left agenting to run a studio, albeit on Entourage.
  17. I enjoyed the time we spent together. Just to have a laugh and sing a song. Then he tugged his ear and was gone until next Saturday night at 10/9 Central.
  18. Chant interpreted by some ears as "Manny Sucks." Either way, Red Sox ride that positivity to victory.
  19. Hank Greenwald, longtime SF Giants announcer, 83. Did MFYs for a couple of years and didn't care for the owner.
  20. I believe they had the managerial candidates do a "meet the media" session last year.
  21. 41Forever wrote: To be fair, an ottoman had more range than Derek Jeter. Heck, a sofa would have a ton more range that Jeter! Jeter the sofa made teammates better just by their sitting on him.
  22. "We signed a player once," Wilpon told an intimate, according to a source, "and we didn't win a championship," explaining the Mets' decision to fill all their on-field positions next season with office furniture.
  23. To the Marlins belong the Victors -- Mesas, that is.
  24. "Brodie Van Wagenen" puts mind of "Earl J. Waggedorn," the best friend of Corey, son of the title character, on the groundbreaking multiracial (if painfully dull) NBC sitcom Julia. Sort of like I can't hear a reference to "Nido" and not think, "you say neato/check your libido/and roll to the church/in your new tuxedo" from Young MC's "Bust A Move". Which is not to say Van Wagenen wouldn't make a good general manager. Or that Tomas Nido won't develop into a splendid catcher, assuming Van Wegenen doesn't trade him.
  25. DiComo attributes to a "source" the update that the candidates are now three: Bloom, Melvin, Van Wegenen. "All other candidates are out."
