    I believe it's a function of deadlines. The game ended around 12:30 AM. The News pictured is a Racing Final, not a Sports Final. New York Newsday tended to be an earlier edition than LI. I know the later News had a photo of Marv Albert interviewing Ray Knight, leading me to infer they went with whatever they could get amid the time crunch. Also: no Sunday NY Post in 1986.

    There's the possibility Stroman wanted to rejoin his teammates or resume a sense of routine (speaking from experience when I chose to cut my own “take all the time you need” short after a death in the family).

    When Stroman was headed for the BL, Rojas discussed the timing in terms of Stroman's preparation for his next start, leading me to believe it must be considered beneficial to not have the next day's starting pitcher come in cold after several days away.

    The only “ONE AND ONLY ONE” I'd consider as “this guy should go in on his own because he's this guy” is Wright, and I'd pair the occasion with 5 rising to the rafters. The irony would be David is is as selfless a character as one could imagine and he'd happily share his day with any 5 Mets.
