  1. I had the post game on when Javy was up. I just sat there wide eyed thinking shut the fuck up man while you still can. I have nothing against him or his thought process but there will be plenty who will jump all over it. And an off day tomorrow. The Post and Snooze back page designers probably ejaculated on themselves.

  7. The Little League World Series tournament has been conducted in brackets named for Tom Seaver and Hank Aaron (h/t bmfc1). https://www.littleleague.org/world-series/2021/llbws/bracket/https://www.littleleague.org/world-series/2021/llbws/bracket/
  8. A thorough tour of Kooz's career, with Kevin Czerwinski guiding No. 36 from its commencement to its conclusion. Koosman won went 21-10 with a 2.69 ERA in 1976 but this time Jones [22-14, 2.74 ERA] won the Cy Young Award. “'76 was my best year as far as concentration,” Koosman said. “My dad died during Spring Training and it was a big shock to me. He was my number one fan. We were very close and when he died my concentration, it was like his spirit was on my right shoulder every pitch I made. I was never able to get that deep concentration like that again. The last 10 years I pitched I could tell you every pitch I threw in order, that was the kind of concentration I had but '76 was way above that. “I thought I deserved the Cy Young but it's out of my control. Seaver had won the year before and the same thing happened with Rookie of the Year. I know there were some writers that didn't think one organization should win two in a row. I've heard that comment.” https://ballnine.com/2021/08/27/kooz/https://ballnine.com/2021/08/27/kooz/
  9. Nido activated, Sisco sent down.
  10. A taste of Gammons's story. Tampa Bay pitching coach Kyle Snyder met Strom after Snyder was the Royals' first pick in the 1999 draft and Strom was their pitching coach. When Snyder considered a post-playing career in professional baseball, he traveled to attend clinics and lectures by Strom and Ron Wolforth of the Texas Baseball Ranch. “Brent Strom is the best pitching coach, bar none,” says Snyder, whose name is often thrown into that discussion, as well. “He paved the way for today's young pitching coaches. He embraced ideas, analytics, with a changing mind, a constantly inquiring mind, understanding how quickly the game is always changing. Tom House was an important pitching savant who changed the business. Brent is the modern savant. “He has such great respect for the game, and he has unending respect for the pitchers with whom he works. He focuses on the person, not the treatment. He is always honest. He understands all levels of strength and conditioning, and how it applies to each individual. In some ways, he's a chameleon in his own way, because the evolution of the game and the individual nature of all pitchers requires that. He also respects everyone with whom he works.” Strom was brought to Houston by Luhnow and worked with A.J. Hinch as manager; the manager and his pitching coach developed a strong relationship. Hinch left after the 2019 season and was replaced by Dusty Baker, who is a few months younger than Strom. “In terms of credibility and trust, no one brings more than Dusty Baker and Brent Strom,” says James Click, who replaced Luhnow as GM after arriving from Tampa Bay. “Given the circumstances in which Dusty came here, it has worked out really well. They're two very respectful people.”

Peter Gammons gives Astros pitching coach and 1972 Met Brent Strom much love (and hires Joe Frazier to manage the Mets four years early). https://theathletic.com/2785449/2021/08/26/gammons-astros-brent-strom-the-best-pitching-coach-bar-none-hasnt-stopped-teaching-or-learning/https://theathletic.com/2785449/2021/08/26/gammons-astros-brent-strom-the-best-pitching-coach-bar-none-hasnt-stopped-teaching-or-learning/
  13. Whatever happened to the Citi statue? Its completion and unveiling will take place in 2022, pushed back one year by COVID and too many years by organizational neglect. FLUSHING, N.Y., May 11, 2021 — The New York Mets today announced that the Tom Seaver statue unveil at Citi Field will take place Opening Day 2022. “We are excited to unveil this one-of-a-kind tribute to Tom, but it has to be right,” said Mets Team President Sandy Alderson. “Given delays related to the pandemic, the artist asked for additional time to complete his work. After conferring with the Seaver family, we made the decision to unveil the statue on Opening Day 2022.” The Seaver family said, “We are excited to celebrate the unveiling with more fans at Citi Field in 2022 and know that Tom would be proud.” https://newyorkmets.medium.com/tom-seaver-statue-to-be-unveiled-in-2022-147e72130d70https://newyorkmets.medium.com/tom-seaver-statue-to-be-unveiled-in-2022-147e72130d70

  18. The Orioles' current 19-game losing skid moved Joe Posnanski to recall the same-sized stumble by the Royals he covered 16 years ago. Eight names jumped out at me as Mets of the former (1), then-present (1) or future variety (6). Five among the 2005 Royals who piled up those Ls in this story were fellas who'd pass through orange and blue by 2009. https://joeposnanski.substack.com/p/the-royal-streakhttps://joeposnanski.substack.com/p/the-royal-streak
  19. Devin Gordon profiles the candidate for GQ. Everywhere he goes, Valentine knows everybody, plus at least one member of their extended family. In the parking lot of Beldotti Bakery (“best Italian bakery in Stamford”) he kibitzes with some rabbis from the neighborhood about how he was here just yesterday, kibitzing in the parking lot with some priests from the neighborhood. “What an ecumenical bakery!” he declares. At Twin Rinks across town, where kids from the local Boys and Girls Club camp are trying out ice skating for the first time, Valentine gets a bear-hug from the camp's director, Ashton Dominique, who's known Bobby V for 16 years. “You can count on him,” Dominique says over the din of stumbling kids. He only told Bobby about this event a few days ago, “and boom—he's here.” Before the kids hit the ice, he asks Bobby V to offer a few words of encouragement, then stands aside as Valentine spins an elegant, on-the-fly metaphor about how learning to skate is a lot like life: You get out there, you wobble, you fall, you get back up, you try again, and before you know it you're flying. If you ask Bobby V, there is no finer place in America than Stamford, Connecticut, but he also doesn't harbor any illusions about its relative majesty. It's not Waikiki. It's not even Westport. It's a Metro North stop on the New Haven line, 59 minutes via express train from Grand Central. It's a stretch of freeway exits on the way to Boston. It's a finance outpost of 130,000 with the charmless office towers to match. “I mean, it's not the dirt, you know? It's the people,” he says. “The community, my entire life, took care of me.” So yes, of course Bobby V wants to be the mayor of Stamford. Of course he thinks he's the obvious choice. He may not have the job yet, but in all kinds of ways, he's already been the mayor of Stamford for years. https://www.gq.com/story/bobby-valentine-mayor-profilehttps://www.gq.com/story/bobby-valentine-mayor-profile
