  1. Here's a strange ending, from June 21, 1973. Going into the bottom of the ninth at Three Rivers Stadium, the score is tied 1-1. PIRATES 9TH: Clines walked; Capra threw a wild pitch [Clines to second]; Cash singled to center [Clines to third]; Oliver was walked intentionally [Cash to second]; MCGRAW REPLACED CAPRA (PITCHING); Robertson hit into a double play (second to catcher) [Oliver out at second (right to shortstop), Cash scored (no RBI), Clines out at home]; 1 R, 1 H, 0 E, 1 LOB. Mets 1, Pirates 2. So after Al Oliver was walked, the bases were loaded with nobody out, and McGraw entered the game. He gets Robertson to ground to second and Millan, correctly, throws home to retire Clines, who would have been the winning run. The Mets then complete the double play, with Staub (in right field) throwing to Fregosi (the shortstop) to get Oliver at second. Duffy Dyer, the catcher, must have made a bad throw when trying to get the second out at second base, but despite that, Staub was still able to nail Oliver at second. But while that was going on, Cash rounded third and scored the winning run.
  2. Wow... I hadn't noticed that.

  5. For some reason Jim Rice's name popped into my head.

  11. I can't believe you're able to watch something like this. You must have a cast-iron stomach.
  12. I'm with you on that. When I said Backman in 2011 I was predicting, not advocating.
  13. I suspect the Mets will fall short. But you're right, if they do make the playoffs, then Jerry comes back, unless he makes outrageous contract demands as a result of the team's success. If that were to happen, they could easily justify replacing him with scrappy fan favorite Backman.
  14. The perfect way for this season to play out would be for the Mets to win the World Series and then have Jerry get fired. (Well, not "fired." I guess "not renewed" would be more accurate.) Extremely unlikely, I know.

  21. 3 walkoffs: Schmidt, Edmonds 2 walkoffs: Bench, Lee, Sosa, Dawson, Perez, Hill, Allen, _______ Our remaining guy played most of his games as a Met opponent in 1989, 1990, and 1991 as a Cub. He also faced the Mets as a Cincinnati Red in 1994 and 1995. Also spent time with the Angels, Braves, Orioles, and Devil Rays.
  22. Yes! Glenallen Hill is the overlooked postseason opponent (3 WS at bats for the 2000 Yankees) and one of our journeymen Cubs. Curt Flood is not correct. Dick Allen is correct! We're down to one journeyman Cub outfielder. Let me see if I can think up a clue for this guy.
  23. Pete Rose is a good guess, but no. Our guy is eligible, and, I think has been in the discussion, but probably hasn't come close. He was a controversial figure, but not in the way Pete was/is. Not Aaron. Our remaining guys are all not in the Hall of Fame.
