  1. Stop feeling Melvin! It's kind of creepy, and you may frighten him away.
  2. Andy Martino wrote: John Gibbons will not interview 4 Mets job, Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin could become a candidate, according to sources. Story up soon
  3. Gibbons is interesting.
  4. Here's Clint and a foxy lady posing in front of his van: If you gave me ten thousand guesses, I never would have said that was Clint Hurdle.
  5. I do hope he comes back.
  6. David Waldstein, NY Times wrote: His first order of business will be to hire a manager, and Alderson has told people he would not favor hiring Wally Backman, the former Met who manages the franchises Class A Brooklyn team. Alderson favors more low-key managers who follow the overall philosophy and strategy set forth by him. Somebody get Art Howe on the line!
  7. I've only seen this once, and it was a long time ago. (I might have been 15 or 16.) I recall not entirely understanding what was going on. I don't know if it was because the plot was complex or confusing, or if it was because I was watching late at night. (Back before VCR's and TiVo, I had to actually stay up very late to watch a late movie.)
  8. For me, he calls to mind Yadier Molina.
  9. What is Ed Price saying?
  10. Well, we have that one tidbit about him preferring an Earl Weaver type to a Gene Mauch, and my hunch is that Backman (based on the kind of player he was, anyway) is on the Mauch side of the spectrum. I also wonder about the reported desire to have a guy with "Mets ties." Sure, the Mets are on Chip Hale's resume, but I would think his "Met factor" is fairly low, much lower than Backman's, Mazzilli's, or Valentine's. Is the "Mets ties" thing (if true; we can't be sure that it is) based on fan acceptance/familiarity? And, finally, my mind keeps coming back to Tim Teufel, perhaps unreasonably. Might he be the three-run-homer guy with Mets ties that would satisfy both Alderson and the Wilpons? He's put up some losing records in the minor leagues as a manager, but I don't know if that's a reflection on him, on his roster, or both. But I do suspect that Tim will get some consideration.
  11. That's the nature of the Philadelphia Inquirer sports section. I guess it's no different than many local newspapers in that it really panders to a home-town bias. The thing is, it wasn't always like that. (I've been reading the Inquirer since 1988.) Their sports section has really degraded over the years.
  12. He's a player with talent, and would have value to some teams in the right role. If I was a GM, and I thought he, at his current level, could help the team, I'd offer him a contract that is in line with what kind of production I'd expect. His value to the Yankees is greater than it is to anyone else. I don't expect any other teams to make a competitive offer, unless things really fall apart between Jeter and the Yankees, which seems unlikely.
  13. Maybe we should send her flowers.
  14. Oooh... like Patrick Swayze!
  15. I don't know what I'd rather see: The Yankees getting burned on a long-term expensive contract to Jeter, or Jeter having to finish out his career in Pittsburgh or Kansas City.
  16. To really be fair, you should only let first-place teams make the playoffs. Let the regular season mean something. The system that was in place from 1969 through 1993 was just fine.

  18. I especially like the part where's he's basically saying he'd prefer an Earl Weaver to a Gene Mauch. Maybe he'll actually hire Earl Weaver himself! I think Earl isn't quite 90 yet, so he might have a few more pennants in him.
  19. No, just any LDS or LCS series that features a wild card team. (But not the World Series)
  20. Almost. There's no minimum salary for General Managers. The Mets would have to pay him a "reasonable" salary. (They couldn't give him an honorary $1-a-year contract, for example.) But Byrnes will make the same income whether he works for the Mets next year or spends his time playing golf.
  21. We have less teams than any other sport, he said last month. We certainly havent abused anything. So let's not start now! Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt is concerned that adding wild-card teams or increasing the length of the division series would make a long season even longer. I don't see any reason to shave eight games off the regular season* to accommodate two extra potential games in the LDS. *I'm assuming here that the season would be reduced to its original 154 games and not to 160. I'd be inclined to leave things as they are. I'd be okay with a best-of-seven LDS, though. (Maybe they can make the home-away counts more tilted against the wild card team. Maybe a 2-5 instead of a 2-3-2.) But I don't want to see the regular season reduced.
  22. Dominique is rather happenin'.
  23. Maybe to give viewers more time to transition from football to baseball?
  24. Is Bill Price related to that AOL Fanhouse guy?
