  1. He was an almost Met a couple of years ago. The Mets and Torrealba agreed on a contract, but then the Mets backed out.
  2. Un-dead Michael Jackson. DING! And we're done: Barry Bonds Bobby Bonilla Will Clark Roger Clemens Eric Davis Shawon Dunston John Franco Andres Galarraga Tony Gwynn Orel Hershiser Michael Jackson Greg Maddux Mike Maddux Terry Mulholland Jamie Moyer Dave Martinez Rafael Palmeiro Tim Raines
  3. Mike Maddux is our ex-Met. One player remains. Barry Bonds Bobby Bonilla Will Clark Roger Clemens Eric Davis Shawon Dunston John Franco Andres Galarraga Tony Gwynn Orel Hershiser Greg Maddux Mike Maddux Terry Mulholland Jamie Moyer Dave Martinez Rafael Palmeiro Tim Raines
  4. Yes. The remaining two pitchers both have the same given name. They were also both Phillies, Mariners, and Astros.
  5. Yes! Very good! Barry Bonds Bobby Bonilla Will Clark Roger Clemens Eric Davis Shawon Dunston John Franco Andres Galarraga Tony Gwynn Orel Hershiser Greg Maddux Dave Martinez Jamie Moyer Rafael Palmeiro Tim Raines Three pitchers remain. One of them was a Met.

  7. Five guys remain. Three of them were pitchers, two of them were Mets. Here's who we have so far: Barry Bonds Bobby Bonilla Will Clark Roger Clemens Eric Davis John Franco Andres Galarraga Tony Gwynn Orel Hershiser Greg Maddux Jamie Moyer Rafael Palmeiro Tim Raines
  8. Raines is correct, but not Larkin. He, like Benito Santiago, did play in the National League in 1986, but without appearing against the Mets. But there is a shortstop for this team.
  9. How many years in a row of free agency is this for Orlando Hudson?
  10. Benito Santiago is a great guess, but wrong. He was a San Diego Padre in 1986, but didn't play against the Mets that year.
  11. Mike Morgan had the longevity, but he was with the Orioles in 1986, so was not a Mets opponent that year.
  12. After Rafael Palmeiro, six more remain. Three of them are pitchers.

  14. Yup. Eight more. Of the eight, three were Mets at some point in their careers.
  15. Article in the Philadelphia Inquirer this morning about Davey Lopes. His beef is that he's being paid as a typical first base coach, when he feels he does more than that. He was completely in charge of the team's baserunning (Charlie Manuel would sometimes give a hit-and-run sign, but Lopes decided when players would steal bases) and he was also the outfield coach. He wasn't expecting the kind of dollars that hitting and pitching coaches get, but he did want more than the Phillies were paying in 2010 and offering for 2011. Says he still wants a job in baseball, but if he doesn't get a job for 2011 he'll probably retire.
  16. 377 players opposed the Mets in 1986 (including in the postseason) and 18 of them were still active in the major leagues in 2000 or later. Edgy listed eight of them above. There are ten others remaining.
  17. John Smoltz, too. I can probably generate a full list through SQL, but will wait until you give a green light, lest I spoil any fun. EDIT: Oops, scratch Smoltz. He doesn't go back as far as I thought. He first played against the Mets in 1988.
  18. Let's not forget Willie McCovey!
  19. Santana Dickey Pelfrey Niese Gee
  20. I fear that Santana will miss more time in 2011 than he did in 2010. Maine will probably be gone, but I do think that the starts that Perez and Maine got in 2010 will be replaced by better efforts from someone else in 2011. And I also agree that Niese will probably be better. Pelfrey had a really good year, but in the middle had a really horrible July. I don't know what to think about him for 2011. Hopefully we'll see more consistency and/or some improvement, but he could, perhaps, just as easily go the other way and decline.
  21. Isn't it "illogical" to be a fan of any team, really?
  22. I think Backman would be a very popular choice among the fans. At least, among those old enough to remember 1986.
  23. It might have been nice to hear that the Mets had approved a one-year payroll spike for 2011 to give them a competitive boost, but I really didn't expect it. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they ponied up during the summer if they're in the race, but I understand their current restraint.

Ceetar wrote: I don't like the "not aggressive" in the market thing, unless that was spin to say "no Lee or Crawford" which is fine. but hinting that the budget exists and the number isn't much higher than what the payroll is now kinda hurts. It's no surprise that he's handcuffed a bit for 2011. I think they'll be freely (and hopefully wisely) spending in the 2011-12 offseason. Sandy implied that they'll have an extra $50 million* to work with. * Right now they have $110 million committed to multi-year contracts, after 2011 it will be down to $60 million.
