  1. Yeah, the "two finalists" thing is speculation from Mets beat writers and bloggers. The Mets never made any such statement. It all seems to be based on Sandy's statement that he values prior big league experience. In his interview with Kevin Burkhardt, in which he made that statement, he made it clear that that wasn't an absolute requirement. But it's being interpreted as if it was.
  2. You have much more fondness for the recent cards than I do. Of the above, the only one that tickles me is the Mets Maulers one, which I don't think I had ever seen before. That 1976 Tom Seaver is almost too recent for my tastes! (Gosh, I'm old.)
  3. HoJo as batting coach seems pretty unlikely, doesn't it?

  5. I really hope that Jose Oquendo is completely dazzling tomorrow.

  7. I just looked through my Mets cards (I only went as far as 1973; there's no way my favorite card would come from any year other than 1971, 1972, or 1973.) and the one that was most evocative for me, for whatever reason, was the 1971 Donn Clendenon. I also liked the 1971 Ken Singleton and the 1973 Willie Mays. That assortment offered by Topps doesn't include much from those years (just one card!) but they came pretty close to featuring my all-time favorite card. I like the 1972 Roberto Clemente better than any card ever, and Topps included the 1973 Clemente card.
  8. MLB.com wrote: SAN DIEGO -- The Padres landed Marlins outfielder Cameron Maybin, a former first-round Draft pick and top prospect, in a trade on Saturday. The deal will be announced after Maybin completes a physical, according to a baseball source. The Marlins, who were seeking bullpen help this winter, will receive right-handed relievers Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica in return, MLB.com confirmed.
  9. Adam Rubin and David Lennon are both reporting that Jose Oquendo will be interviewed on Monday.
  10. We don't know if these guys really are the front-runners, but if they are (as Adam Rubin is reporting), which one would you prefer?
  11. I think that Sandy will stick around for the four years of his contract. George W. Bush as Commissioner doesn't seem entirely unlikely. (I just wish he had taken that job ten years ago instead of the job that he did get.)
  12. I'm bumping this one just in case Terry is announced as the next Mets manager later this month. The comments made in this thread are especially insightful!
  13. Google archives search revealed this, from the New York Times: LIFE CALLED HARD IN DODGER INFIELD; Martin, Twins' Coach,... ? $3.95 - New York Times - Oct 12, 1965 Today the first-ball pitcher was Craig Swan, who pitched for the championship Long Beach team in the Pony League. The second pitch today was out by S. ...
  14. The 30 is just part of the formula. Their actual scores, the products of the formula, is 8,820 points for Gooden and 6,030 for Mazzilli. It's those numbers that affect the all-time rankings.
  15. Intriguing... Think the Mets will be in on it? (Probably not, I'd guess.)
  16. Voted a fifth-place tie between Parnell and Acosta: 5 Takahashi 4 Rodriguez 3 Dessens 2 Feliciano 0.5 Parnell 0.5 Acosta If that's not kosher, then please give Parnell the full point and drop Acosta.
  17. Ceetar wrote: Geeze. There are no type a or b 2Bman there. Well, no Type A's, anyway. There are two of Type B. (I don't see any Type O at all on the entire list, however.)
  18. I havent read any of these (I only tend to read one or two baseball books per year anymore) but the 1884 book intrigues me. And maybe I will give the Cardboard book a try. The next baseball book I read is likely to be the Walter Johnson book that his grandson wrote.
  19. 1. Who will manage? Tim Teufel. I know he's a longshot, but my Spidey senses tell me he was the kind of player that Sandy wants in a manager. I know that's not all that logical, but it is what it is. 2. Who will be replaced on the coaching staff? Everybody? Warthen and Hale will remain. 3. Will the secondbaseman be an internal guy or will they look outside? From the outside. Hudson might be nice, but it may be Eckstein instead. 4. Beltran in center or right on opening day? Right 5. Will Reyes be extended or traded or will they allow him to play out his walk year. Extended before Opening Day 6. Will Oliver Perez be shed? Yes 7. Will this jet set scene continue, or will he be a regular in Flushing? Flushing. I think for the short term, he still has prior commitments to honor. 8. Francisco Rodriguez? Traded before June 30 9. Which of these semi-ripe guys gets a big opportunity out of camp: a) Lucas Duda? yes Fernando Martinez? no c) Dillon Gee yes d) Jenrry Mejia yes e) Tejada? no 10. Who plays Santa? Josh Thole
  20. That's funny... I checked that too! Those games came in 1936 with the Tigers.

Well, they've apparently been conducting an investigation and it led to the suspension of the clubhouse guy. Doesn't exactly sound like they've been keeping their heads in the sand.
  22. What does Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse say?
  23. Sparky as Phillies shortstop in 1959:
  24. Griffey?
