  1. I do think he'll get a few save chances because I don't expect Francisco to hold down the "closer" job for the entire season, start to finish. And yes, I also despise this assigned-inning crap. I don't think it will last forever, but it has already gone on for far too long. Eventually some new conventional wisdom about bullpen management will come along. Whether it will be better or worse than what we have now, who can say?
  2. Maybe to remind him that the object is to get guys out.
  3. Losing record in April. Winning records in May and June will stir some fleeting hope. July will be a bit under .500, and August and September will be horrific.
  4. I remember that I used to read every Mets book that came out. Then Lenny Dykstra "wrote" a book, and I just couldn't go there, so that cured me. Dickey seems like a good guy, and I'm certainly rooting for his success to continue, but I do roll my eyes at his faux intellectualism. I doubt that I'll read his book, but who knows? If I eventually see it on a remainder table for a buck or two I might pick it up and let it ripen on my bookshelf for a few years before I finally read it.
  5. 60 games, 3.30 ERA, five saves. He's on a Schaefer Reliever-of-the-Month streak; if he wins it in April it will be the third consecutive time.
  6. 4th place. 76-86. No playoffs.
  7. I'm also pretty confident that the Mets will win 71 (or more!) games. Is there a way to actually place a bet on this? How does it work?
  8. If I were the Mets, I'd consider trading him too. I'd also be concerned about his salary. (I'm surprised they gave him that contract.) It's also true that he'd be difficult to trade, and that there's no obvious candidate to replace him. But as you say, where's the news here? It just seems to be Heyman wanting a reason to snark about something.
  9. Well, sure, he's a celebrity. Every place like that I've ever been to has age limits. If I remember right, you can't go on the equipment if you're over 12, or something like that. I was reading the details of the injury in the paper this morning.... GAH!
  10. Wow, look at that 1999: Seven homers in 40 at bats, and a 1.000 slugging percentage. That's enough to really get a reputation started.
  11. Finally saw this the other day. I gave it two stars, and I think I was being generous. Lots of action and special effects, but what a lifeless movie. Ryan Reynolds was awful. He wasn't playing Hal Jordan, he was playing Will Farrell.
  12. My guess is that the shortstop named "Davis" is Ozzie Smith.
  13. He's a little less than half as old as Darryl Strawberry.
  14. Opening Day two weeks from today. Is it kind of late in the Grapefruit League to have only four regulars in the starting lineup?
  15. I think he'll hit a bunch of homers, but he'll be a bit one-dimensional. .242, 31 homers, 84 RBI.
  16. This is a tough one; there are so many ways it can go. Here's what I'll say: Stays with the Mets for the entire season. .275, 24 HR, 88 RBI. Falls short of getting enough hits to pass Ed Kranepool.
  17. So that means the Mets will win more than 70 games. I think they're pretty likely to do that.
  18. I'm gonna guess that he's limited to about 100 games. But... if he does have a mostly injury-free season, Murphy will hit .315 with 12 homers and 42 doubles. And, should he be worthy, he will possess the power of THOR!
  19. Maybe a little improvement, but not nearly enough to come close to justifying his salary. If he plays more or less every day, I'm figuring about 15 homers, .250 batting average and 70-something RBI. He'll have a few hot streaks, but for the most part, the disappointment will continue. There's virtually no way that the Mets will allow that 2014 option to vest. The only scenario I can see where that would happen is if Bay is playing like a superstar in 2013 and the Mets are strong contenders. But that seems to be very much a longshot. I'd like to think that it's possible that Bay will lose his starting job before the year is out if he continues to muddle along as he has been, but I'm not sure how likely that is to happen. It seems that the Mets rarely (if ever) cut bait while there's more than a year remaining on a contract.
  20. I just watched Mets Yearbook for the first time ever. It was the 1965 edition. A few observations: Shea Stadium as I first knew it, green and park-like. No loudspeakers, no garishness. The Astrodome with grass! The Cincinnati Reds with the players' names on the back of the uniform, just above the belt and below the uniform number. Yogi Berra presenting a cow with a Mets jersey. The centerfield fence at Williamsport had the following message painted on it in big white letters: ATTEND THE CHURCH OF YOUR CHOICE EVERY SUNDAY. (In other words, we don't care what religion you are, but it better be Christian!) Ron Swoboda and Tug McGraw visit the set of Bonanza and schmooze with Lorne Green and Michael Landon. Ron Swoboda has the nickname of "Robust Ron." A weird-looking Shea Stadium cake presented to an absent Casey Stengel after his broken hip. Lindsey Nelson tells us that someday a superstar will come along and lead the Mets to a World Series, and it might be me!
  21. Yeah, sign David Wright and get us a starting pitcher who can start and pitch.
  22. Davis on merit, and Wright on reputation.
  23. If he is able to play 140 or more games, and in the newly configured home ballpark, I fully expect him to hit at least 30 homers.
