  1. Murphy at first would be a much more appealing option if the Mets got a real kickass second baseman. Murphy at first so that Eric Young can play second base? Not so much.
  2. Everyone with inside info is saying that that's what the Mets want to do, not what they should do. Many people I've seen on Mets Hot Stove in the last couple of weeks (Gary Cohen, Ron Darling, Jim Duquette, Andy Martino, and, I think, John Harper) all tend to prefer keeping Ike over keeping Lucas. Me, although I used to be totally on Team Ike, would rather see a Plan C, whatever that might be.
  3. It sounds like the Mets want Ike to be gone, and I expect he will be, probably before New Year's.
  4. Scott Boras is his agent. He initially wanted five years, but the buzz is that nobody wants to go that long for him, and maybe three years would get him. He probably won't get cheap enough for the Mets to bite, but who knows? If he gets into January, unexpected things might happen.
  5. It really doesn't look like Syndergaard is going anywhere. And thanks for asking for the clarification on "Thor"; I had no idea who that might have been.
  6. There's been a lot of talk about Ike's ceiling (especially on Mets Hot Stove this week) but you can't overlook his basement. And it seems that the teams the Mets are talking to are well aware of Ike's basement.
  7. I think the 170 was Lolich's birth weight.
  8. Jon Heyman says that the Mets and Brewers are meeting today to talk about Ike Davis.
  9. That 170 for Lolich is legendarily nutty.
  10. I just looked up Colon's stats. For some reason I thought he was a long-time Montreal Expo, but he only was with them in 2002. I couldn't have named any of the other teams that he had played for. I guess I'm far from an expert on Bartolo Colon.
  11. I called this one (sort of) back on August 26 LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Benjamin Grimm wrote: seawolf17 wrote: He signed with the Angels a few weeks ago. Oh. Who's next on the depth chart? Bartolo Colon? Jerry Koosman? Laugh it up, fuzzball-- Bartolo Colon is 14-5, 2.97, and an All-Star this year. I can't find Koos' stats. Has he been out of circulation or something?
  12. That would probably lure Mike Piazza out of retirement!
  13. They should try to find a hitter named "Pinetar."
  14. I think they're saying that you can't knock over the catcher in an attempt to dislodge the ball. That doesn't mean you can't come into contact with the catcher. If that was the case, then he wouldn't be allowed to tag you, would he? They seem to be saying that you have to slide into home plate feet first if the catcher is there, and that the catcher can't be there unless he has the ball or needs to be there to get the throw. My daughter's softball league had a similar rule. Anyone who didn't slide into home plate was out. (And that happened a lot because most of the girls in this particular league, at least, didn't like to slide.)
  15. Kevin Burkhardt asked Sandy on Mets Hot Stove last night if the payroll could be expanded if the situation called for it, and Sandy gave a one-word answer: "Maybe." As Frayed Knot said, counting the dollars is pretty pointless given that there may be flexibility, and even if there isn't, we don't know the exact limit anyway. I'm certainly not going to worry about whether the Mets have enough money to sign a backup catcher.
  16. I like it. It's a risk, but if you avoid risk entirely you never get anywhere, both in baseball and in life. I do think they need Colon more in 2014 than in 2015 when Harvey is expected back and guys like Syndergaard and de Grom and whoever else all have another year of experience. If Colon is still productive, and the Mets don't need him in 2015, he can be traded. If he's awful, then of course they've blown ten million dollars of their 2015 money, but as I said, risks are unavoidable. Andy Martino last night on Mets Hot Stove said that this makes the Mets a contender, at least for a wild card spot. I'm not sure if I'd go that far, but if it turns out that he's right, then the second year may just be the price that you pay for the first year. And who knows? Maybe he'll be pitching for the Mets in the 2015 World Series.
  17. There used to be a rule, I don't know if it's still in effect, that said that a newly signed free agent couldn't be traded until June 1 (or July 1?) of his first year with his new team.

  19. I know it's probably not the wisest move, but I'd kinda like to see Sandy drive up the market for Davis and Duda by signing Loney, thereby removing him as an option for the Brewers, the Rays, and whoever else. That evil plan would have a better chance of working if there weren't so many other first basemen available, as listed in a previous post.
  20. It's December 11.
  21. The initial prognosis, when he had his surgery, was that he'd miss all of 2014. Maybe he's on track now to be back sooner than that. Even if not, it may pay to have him in reserve for 2015.
  22. That quote is WAY more swoony than Anthony Recker's face.
  23. Adam McCalvy wrote: #Brewers & #Mets met today to talk about NY's available first basemen. Brewers also met with Corey Hart's agent. Groundwork on both fronts. Adam McCalvy (?@AdamMcCalvy) is the Brewers beat writer for MLB.com
  24. Edgy's post snuck in ahead of mine. If they keep both Davis and Duda, they can give Ike one more try and if he flops, there's still Duda and Satin.
