  1. At first glance, I thought the numbers represented the fielders' positions, but that would mean that the third baseman was playing against the center field wall and the center fielder was pitching. I doubt that that happened very often! My guess is that it's something like this: 1 - first base 2 - shortstop 3 - third base 4 - left field (not pictured) 5 - center field 6 - right field 7 - second base 8 - pitcher
  2. Yeah, really. David Cone? Kevin McReynolds? My point was that the Mets improved a lot from 1983 to 1984 without making a significant offseason deal, and that their improvement came almost entirely from young players maturing. The fact that they got David Cone three years later, or Mike Piazza fourteen years later, has nothing at all to do with that.
  3. Former Mets pitching coach has died at the age of 78. http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2015/01/26/monbouquette/iGgwVhOCnuDnmlrekjSRfN/story.html
  4. That doesn't surprise me at all.
  5. Would that mean expansion? Or relocation? I suppose that right now the teams most likely to relocate are the Rays and the Athletics. I think that if I were in charge of either of those teams there would be at least a few places I'd choose over Montreal.
  6. I found this: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/24992568/rob-manfred-says-hes-open-to-banning-extreme-defensive-shifts What a stupid idea!
  7. Banning defensive shifts? I'm not familiar with that one.
  8. I don't know... the Mets improved quite a bit from 1983 to 1984 and this is what they did between those two seasons. None of these moves got anybody excited. December 8, 1983 New York Mets traded Bob Bailor and Carlos Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Sid Fernandez and Ross Jones. January 17, 1984 New York Mets signed free agent Rafael Santana. January 27, 1984 New York Mets signed free agent Dick Tidrow of the Chicago White Sox. January 30, 1984 New York Mets released Dave Kingman. February 22, 1984 New York Mets released Mark Bradley. March 17, 1984 New York Mets signed free agent Jerry Martin of the Kansas City Royals. April 1, 1984 New York Mets traded Tucker Ashford to the Kansas City Royals for Tom Edens.
  9. I feel bad for Wilmer Flores. I think the Mets fans are going to give him a lot of undeserved shit for not being Tulowitski or Desmond or Honus Wagner.
  10. If Matz or Plawecki were included, I'd be more interested in Desmond signing an extension than in the Nationals sending $11 million. (The Mets, of course, might very well see it differently.) I'd rather see Plawecki stay with the Mets for another year or so to make sure that d'Arnaud is for real, and then trade him for someone who will have a longer-term impact than a one-year rental. As for Matz, I would like to keep him. Colon will be gone after the season (if not before) and Niese's health has become questionable. I can easily see a rotation in 2016 with Harvey, Wheeler, Syndergaard, and Matz.
  11. Last night on Mets Hot Stove, Jim Duquette suggested that the Mets might be able to acquire Desmond from Washington by sending Murphy and one of the following: Matz, Plawecki, or Montero. (Duquette's thought is that after signing Scherzer, the Nationals will be looking for some payroll relief. I'm not sure how much this proposed deal would help with that. Murphy will make $8 million this year, and Desmond will make $11 million. Does the difference of $3 million mean all that much to a team that just committed $210 million?) I'd be inclined to hold back on Plawecki; if they ultimately trade him I'd want more than a one-year guy. Same is true for Matz, so of the three options, I'd prefer including Montero. Is there a new rule that would prohibit the Mets from getting a draft pick compensation if they traded for Desmond and then lost him to free agency? Or does that new rule only apply to in-season trades? I know there was something about that, but I don't recall the details.
  12. One The Wiggles are in your head, they tend to stay there. (Both of my kids outgrew The Wiggles years ago.) But I see this thread title and I think, "Mets on the Air, Rock-a-bye Your Bear."
  13. I think that may be because of the old saw about how you're not supposed to lose your job if you had an injury. (Remember how John Franco whined about that when he lost his closer role to Benitez?) But even if Parnell goes into Opening Day as the "closer" he won't keep the job long if he doesn't perform, so I don't really care who Terry is talking about in January.
  14. I'll admit that I haven't been reading this thread too carefully, which is why I'm unclear about what the Mets new scoreboard has to do with Bill Cosby.
  15. Mets Guy in Michigan wrote: Each of his eyes is a different color. How many does he have?
  16. This reminds me of "Top Talent the Alligator."
  17. If the Mets trade Murphy for Desmond, and Desmond becomes the shortstop, then who plays second base? Flores, I'd assume. This trade then wouldn't be about replacing Flores in the lineup, but Murphy.
  18. Hmmmm.... batMEGaDAnLeadoff
  19. I can totally understand not wanting to deal Syndergaard for only one guaranteed year of Desmond. Where Megdal says that the Mets could have simply requested a negotiating window, he neglects to mention that those windows are the exception, and most deals (for whatever reason) don't include them. You can't assume that the Mets had that option. And you can't assume that it was money that prevented this deal from happening; it's just one of several potential reasons.
  20. I don't imagine that they're going to do that, but if they do, then they'll also probably want to trade Niese or Colon in addition to Gee.
  21. My guess is that it's this: "2. Or is it that the Giants don't want to trade for Gee until they know Shields is no longer an option for them?"
  22. DAN WHEELER???
  23. He hit a big grand slam for the Mets. That's really about it. It's nice at least that he had that one big moment. Most short-term players never manage to get that.
  24. And for every Gary Cohen or Bob Costas or Vin Scully out there, there are at least eight or ten idiots who happen to have a job sitting behind a microphone.
