  1. I once pretended to like Ichiro in order to be polite to three teenage girls on a bus in Kyoto. (They were aghast when I told them I didn't like the New York Yankees, and I felt like I needed to find some common ground. This was when Ichiro was still a Seattle Mariner.)

  3. SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK, 2015 Week ending April 11, 2015: Travis d'Arnaud, 4.86 points. Week ending April 18, 2015: Lucas Duda, 8.80 points. Week ending April 25, 2015: Matt Harvey, 6.45 points.
  4. I'm so tempted to lock this thread so that it can't receive any additional posts.
  5. The announcement is kind of required, isn't it, at least for pinch hitters, because that's when they're officially in the game. A manager waits for the left-handed pinch hitter to be announced, for example, before he tells the umpire that he's bringing in a lefty reliever.
  6. Voting for Monday night's win in Miami will close on Thursday morning, some time after 10 a.m. Schaefer POTG 4/27/15 - Mets 3, Marlins 1
  7. Granderson 1.5 Lagares 3.5 Montero 2 Murphy 1.5 ATorres 1
  8. Reportedly pissed that he won't be the thousandth Met.
  9. I loved the expression on Granderson's face as he was coming home.
  10. The thing that bugs me about Harper is how much he equivocates. The Mets made a bad trade when they got Smith, because his best days are behind him. However, it's possible that Smith will rebound and be very productive. But Smith hasn't hit a home run in 45 games. They should consider releasing him. On the other hand, if Smith goes on a hot streak, he can become a valuable trade chip.
  11. Voting for all three games played in the Bronx this past weekend will close on Wednesday morning, some time after 10 a.m. Schaefer POTG 4/24/15: MFYs 6 Mets 1 Schaefer POTG 4/25/15 - Mets 8, MFY's 2! Schaefer POTG 4/26/15 - MFY's 6, Mets 4
  12. I like it too. I think it's a good idea to have grey on the road cap. I think I'd like it better if the button on top was grey instead of orange. Maybe even if the bill was grey too.
  13. Why isn't Jeff Wilpon in that photo?
  14. Yes, you're probably right. It's possible that the mistake is mine, or it could be Retrosheet's, which is the source of the data. Although... Cey only has two runs batted in, which could mean himself and Russell. I'll have to look (when I get a chance) to see exactly how Lopes scored. Maybe some nutty mishap that occurred as a result of Russell's single? I was thinking, if we (or more accurately, the Mets) can push the .500 date back two more years, to the beginning of the 1977 season, then we should instantly jump back another two-plus years, to late 1974, because the Mets had winning records in 1975 and 1976. To do that this year, of course, will require the Mets to win around 130 games (seat of the pants calculation) but with luck, maybe by late next year we'll see scorecards from 1974 in this thread.
  15. Saying "pitchers should learn how to hit" seems a little facile to me. Not every top athlete can learn how to hit. (Didn't Michael Jordan have problems hitting in Double A?) It's just that when a first baseman or an outfielder can't hit, he doesn't get anywhere near the big leagues, even if he's good with the glove. But a pitcher who can't hit will still advance because nobody ever cut a pitcher because he couldn't hit a breaking ball.
  16. Familia 0.5 Gee 5 Murphy 4 CTorres 0.5
  17. Since we have a thread about the DH in the National League, and another one about love for the black caps and jerseys, I figured we might as well have a thread advocating Derek Jeter in the Mets Hall of Fame. WHO'S WITH ME???
  18. I'd like them to delay this for another forty years or so. In 2055, I'll be 92 years old, and either dead or nearly dead. Either way, I won't have much baseball watching ahead of me, so they can do whatever they want. National League games are far more interesting than American League games.
  19. I think at most it helps 15 players each season. These would be guys who have full-time jobs, and earn the salary of a regular player, instead of the salary of a bench player. If the elimination of the DH was combined with the expansion of the roster to 27 players, that would create 60 new major leaguers, and 60 new union members.
