  5. Wasn't there a (probably apocryphal) story that somehow linked Nelson Doubleday to Rudyard Kipling? I remember when we were first introduced to Doubleday, in 1980, there was a quote of his that got a lot of play. When he was a kid, other kids teased him by saying something like, "You little stooge, your great uncle invented baseball." I mainly remember reading that "little stooge" quote multiple times.

  7. A big chance to extend the team's perfect home record against Toronto for perhaps another three years. Courtesy: http://www.ultimatemets.com I'm surprised to see that it's been 14 years since the Blue Jays last came to Queens. The gap from 2006 to 2012 with no games between the Mets and Jays is also a little strange. I guess that for some reason that matchup was skipped the last time the AL East played the NL East.

  9. I'm not terribly optimistic. This doesn't feel like a championship team to me, but I also don't feel like the wheels are about to come off, as I did in 2010. I think they'll hang in there for a while. If they can stay close and have a strong September, then this could be a 1973 kind of year. Count me among those who doesn't see a Wild Card in the cards for this year. The division title is their best path the the playoffs. They've already shortened the season, in a way. They no longer have to outplay the Nationals (and the other three teams, of course) over 162 games; they just have to do it over 97 games.

  13. "Could be back by the All-Star break" and "Could miss the rest of the season" aren't contradictory statements. It just means that there's a best case and a worst case.
