  1. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2018/4-01w.jpg> In perhaps the most surprising upset of this competition, bad-news cover MIDNIGHT BADNESS has defeated the celebratory GOOD WIL! featuring the much-loved Wilmer Flores. So GOOD WIL! won't, while MIDNIGHT BADNESS becomes the first cover this year to punch its ticket to the Final Four.
  2. I think it's implying that the Mets are falling like raindrops, with a succession of injuries. The headline isn't in the spirit of the song that inspired it, which is about men raining down from the skies like manna from heaven. It's raining men, hallelujah, it's raining men, amen I'm gonna go out to run and let myself get Absolutely soaking wet It's raining men, hallelujah It's raining men, every specimen Tall, blonde, dark and lean Rough and tough and strong and mean
  3. They seem to really be targeting infielders. My hunch is that they think they'll be able to dump Todd Frazier (and hopefully his salary) somehow. Either that, or they're going to trade Jeff McNeil. I prefer the first option.
  4. Today's poll is the last one until next week, when we'll have two polls that will determine our finalists.
  5. Can Smile High win in a shutout? There has only been one shutout in TCD history, and that was in the second round in 2016, when Newsday's 11th HEAVEN won all 15 votes against the Daily News' ALL TOO FAMILIA. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2016/20160923_NSD_02.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2016/20161006_NYDN_02.jpg>
  6. It looks like SMILE HIGH will be my favorite going forward, now that the two Wilmer covers are on the brink.

The Mets lose Yoenis Cespedes to the DL and a game to the Blue Jays on a rainy afternoon in Queens. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180517_NYDN_02.jpg> Winner of http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27540Round 1.14 Winner of http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27644Round 3.06 SMILE HIGH Newsday, June 19, 2018. Brandon Nimmo hits two home runs as the Mets beat the Rockies in Denver. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180619_NSD_02.jpg>
  8. My impression is that Lockett may turn out to be the sixth or seventh starter, when needed.
  9. I'm already conflating Walker Lockett with Gasoline Alley's Walt Wallet.

Amed Rosario hits two homers and Asdrubal Cabrera hits one too as the Mets complete a three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks at Citi Field. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180521_NYP_02.jpg> Winner of http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27518Round 1.08 Winner of http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27606Round 2.05 Winner of http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27650Round 3.07 GSELL THE MAN! New York Post, April 21, 2018. Robert Gsellman is the hero of the 12th inning in Atlanta. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180421_NYP_02.jpg>
  11. Daniel Kramer, MLB.com wrote: Davis, a third-round Draft pick by Houston in 2014, is coming off a season in which he won the Pacific Coast League batting title, hitting .342 with Triple-A Fresno. He broke into the Majors in 2017, and he's played in 66 big league games over the last two seasons, slashing .194/.260/.321 with five homers. "J.D. is a versatile offensive talent," Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said in a statement. "He's young, had success vs. lefties and he'll provide depth at the corner positions."
  12. It's looks like Brodie is trying to corner the market on guys who hit in the .170s in 2018.
  13. Back when Jacob deGrom was occasionally mortal, in 2017, he gave up two home runs to Broxton, one in advance of the bullpen's Mother's Day meltdown in Milwaukee, one the night Mr. Met was captured giving a fan the finger. The Mother's Day meltdown didn't make the back pages, but the game that inspired Mr. Met's finger did! http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2017/20170601_NYP_02.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2017/20170601_NYDN_02.jpg>http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2017/20170601_NSD_02.jpg>
  14. We'll be taking a break for the weekend and will resume on Monday and Tuesday as we look to complete our Final Four. MONDAY: SWEEP SNAKES (New York Post) vs GSELL THE MAN! (New York Post) TUESDAY: IT'S RAININ' METS (Daily News) vs SMILE HIGH (Newsday)
  15. I don't see it there. https://springfieldmuseums.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/washington-at-home-by-currier-ives.jpg>
  16. I didn't vote for either of these covers in the first round either. I preferred the News' take on Wilmer's walk-off homer and the Post version of David Wright's farewell. I think HEART OF THE CITI is a much better cover than A WRIGHT TO REMEMBER. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180416_NYDN_02.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180930_NYP_01.jpg>

David Wright says good-bye. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180930_NYDN_02.jpg> Winner of http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27515Round 1.07 Winner of http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27600Round 2.02 Winner of http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27634Round 3.04 WHERE THERE'S A WIL Newsday, April 16, 2018. A walkoff homer by Wilmer Flores gives the Mets a 3-2 win over the Brewers. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180416_NSD_02.jpg>
  18. The disappointment and disbelief are palpable at GOOD WIL! headquarters as the returns are coming in. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2018/GoodWilHQ.jpg>
  19. My guess is that the "sports editing" is going to come out of Chicago and the Tribune headquarters. Meanwhile, I'm pretty surprised at how this poll is turning out. I wouldn't have thought that the cover that defeated SUCCESS would lose to MIDNIGHT BADNESS. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2018/3-08w.jpg>
  20. It was 5-4 for BADNESS but now it's 6-3! Somebody has done the Walter White thing, switching from GOOD to BADNESS.

The Cubs score six runs in the 14th inning as another strong outing from Jacob deGrom is wasted. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180603_NYDN_02.jpg> Winner of http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27545Round 1.16 Winner of http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27653Round 3.08 GOOD WIL! New York Daily News, July 10, 2018. More walk-off heroics for Wilmer Flores, as the Mets defeat the Phillies. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180710_NYDN_02.jpg>
  22. Fate (and math) gave IT'S RAININ' METS and MIDNIGHT BADNESS a series of weak opponents. I would be surprised if their luck continued.
  23. The Tabloid Cover Derby will resume tomorrow. This will begin the fourth round, in which the eight surviving covers will be reduced to the prestigious Final Four. We'll have polls posted on Thursday and Friday, then we'll take a break for the weekend, and then the remaining polls from this round will be posted on Monday and Tuesday. THURSDAY: MIDNIGHT BADNESS (Daily News) vs GOOD WIL! (Daily News) FRIDAY: A WRIGHT TO REMEMBER (Daily News) vs WHERE THERE'S A WIL (Newsday) MONDAY: SWEEP SNAKES (New York Post) vs GSELL THE MAN! (New York Post) TUESDAY: IT'S RAININ' METS (Daily News) vs SMILE HIGH (Newsday) The Friday and Monday polls seem to be a bit harder to predict than those on Thursday and Tuesday. We'll see what happens!
  24. The IMG icon is the little picture of the sun behind the mountains, to the right of the asterisk. The next time you see try to post an image and find that it doesn't work, post it anyway (in its broken state) so that I can take a look. For more on FIMG, see the post with the cows in http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB32/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=27774this thread.
  25. Marc Carig wrote: Hearing that the Astros and Mets have recently been engaged in trade talks. Houston has shown interest in Seth Lugo and New York has been doing some background work on Astros minor leaguers. Unclear if talk has gained traction. Marc Carig wrote: Some added context here. Told Seth Lugo's name got floated out as part of wider-ranging trade talks between the Astros and Mets. Sounds like the sides kicked around a bunch of different ideas of late. Thus far, none have gained traction.
