I would have guessed that Reggie Jackson was born in Pennsylvania, because he went to high school in Cheltenham.

FIFTH ANNUAL TABLOID COVER DERBY!
Benjamin Grimm replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
Slight change of plans: Instead of starting on November 4, as initially announced, we'll start the day after the World Series ends. Two reasons: 1. I plan to be away for much of December and am not sure if I'll have daily access to keep the Derby going regularly, and 2. Why not? -

Off the top of my head... Stengel, Berra, Green... I think that's it, right? (Not counting Torre, who managed the Mets before going to the Yankees.)

It would be nice if there was a way to actually play this tournament in OOTP or something. (I'm assuming there isn't, but maybe there is?)

FIFTH ANNUAL TABLOID COVER DERBY!

http://leaptoad.com/mets/jpeg/TCD.png> It's almost here! The fifth annual Tabloid Cover Derby will begin on Monday, November 4, 2019! The kickoff ceremony occurred in the rotunda at Citi Field, attended by long-time Queens residents Mike and Gloria Stivic. (We'll overlook their ill-advised move to California and any other plot developments that may have occurred during or after Archie Bunker's Place.) Yes, Mike is still a Mets fan, and it's been a long time since anyone has called him "Meathead." The first round will contain at least 24 voting threads, up by two over last year's count. (This may increase if there are enough Mets covers published over the next month or so.) If the count remains at 24, then the eight covers that receive the highest vote percentage in the first round will receive a second-round bye. Will the Daily News continue its record-setting run of four consecutive championships? Is 2019 the kind of year that gets a good-news cover or a bad-news cover as the winner? Is it inevitable that Pete Alonso's image will be hanging over Maja's desk in Stockholm, or will some surprise cover emerge as the winner? The answers will begin to emerge in just a few short weeks! Be here! If you miss out, then you'll be missing out! http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2019/all_TCD_winners_2018.png> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2019/2019_Kickoff.jpg>

THE SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2019 http://potg.leaptoad.com/mets/images/schaefer2019.jpg> PLAYER OF THE YEAR http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/cards/PeteAlonso1972.jpg> The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year for 2019 is PETE ALONSO, with 124.86 points. Since Pete is a rookie he is obviously a first-time winner. His point total falls just short of the post-2005 record set last year by Jacob deGrom. PREVIOUS WINNERS: 2005 - David Wright, 140.17 points*; 2006 - David Wright, 121.16; 2007 - David Wright, 124.77; 2008 - Johan Santana, 121.37; 2009 - David Wright, 91.72; 2010 - David Wright, 117.56; 2011 - Jose Reyes, 104.96; 2012 - David Wright, 113.06; 2013 - Daniel Murphy, 107.30; 2014 - Lucas Duda, 95.62; 2015 - Jacob deGrom, 97.08; 2016 - Yoenis Cespedes, 90.62; 2017 - Jacob deGrom, 92.11; 2018 - Jacob deGrom, 126.99. * Totals were higher in 2005 because of a rule specifying that ten points were to be awarded for each game. http://potg.leaptoad.com/mets/images/all_winners2019.png> PITCHER OF THE YEAR http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1978.jpg> The Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Year is, for the fourth time, JACOB deGROM. And it wasn't at all close. Jacob's 106.29 points allowed him to finish well ahead of runner-up Zack Wheeler's 78.01 points. PREVIOUS WINNERS: 2005 - Pedro Martinez, 120.68 points*; 2006 - Tom Glavine, 80.26; 2007 - Tom Glavine, 75.97; 2008 - Johan Santana, 121.37; 2009 - Johan Santana, 84.61; 2010 - Johan Santana, 90.42; 2011 - R.A. Dickey, 69.40; 2012 - R.A. Dickey, 110.12; 2013 - Matt Harvey, 86.68; 2014 - Bartolo Colon, 74.77; 2015 - Jacob deGrom, 97.08; 2016 - Noah Syndergaard, 89.81; 2017 - Jacob deGrom, 92.11; 2018 - Jacob deGrom, 126.99. * Totals were higher in 2005 because of a rule specifying that ten points were to be awarded for each game. RELIEF PITCHER OF THE YEAR http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/cards/SethLugo1971.jpg> The reliever of the year is a repeat of last year's winner, SETH LUGO. He earned 39.38 points out of the bullpen. Edwin Diaz finished second with 22.25. PREVIOUS WINNERS: 2006 - Billy Wagner, 40.39 points; 2007 - Aaron Heilman, 34.86; 2008 - Aaron Heilman, 34.50; 2009 - Francisco Rodriguez, 38.58; 2010 - Hisanori Takahashi 28.69; 2011 - Pedro Beato, 25.93; 2012 - Bobby Parnell, 29.01; 2013 - LaTroy Hawkins, 32.30; 2014 - Carlos Torres, 35.75; 2015 - Jeurys Familia, 35.85; 2016 - Jeurys Familia, 36.70; 2017 - Paul Sewald, 22.41; 2018 - Seth Lugo, 36.26. BENCH PLAYER OF THE YEAR http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JDDavis1974.jpg> The Bench Player of the Year is J.D. Davis, who earned a record 10.98 points in games in which he was not in the starting lineup, breaking the standard set last year by Wilmer Flores. Are you old enough to remember the 1969 season? Do you want to be interviewed on the radio? I received this email overnight: [bLOCKQUOTE]To Whom It May Concern: My name is Steve Kastenbaum. I am the New York Bureau Chief for Westwood One News, a national radio news network providing daily news coverage to news and talk radio stations across the country. I am in need of a Mets fan who was around in '69 that I can interview. I'm on an urgent deadline. I need to conduct a recorded interview on Tuesday, October 15th for reports that will air on the 50th anniversary of the Miracle Mets. Do you know of anyone I could reach out to who might be able to accommodate me? Thank you. Sincerely, Steve Kastenbaum New York Bureau Chief, Senior Correspondent Westwood One News 4400 Jennifer Street NW, Washington D.C. 20015[/bLOCKQUOTE] If you're interested PM me and I'll give you his contact info.

I don't mind the Stroman deal nearly as much as the Cano/Diaz deal, which was entirely foolish.
