  1. Clearly I didn't forget. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Hey! Remember last September, when I'd keep posting the Mets' playoff odds from Baseball Prospectus? Wasn't it fun seeing the number go from 99.9 per cent down to zero in a matter of weeks? (I was originally posting the stats in order to get comfort from the high odds, but it went terribly, terribly awry.)
  2. Here's the latest. Mets at around 50% for making the playoffs, significantly better than the Marlins, with whom they're tied. Nationals, with the worst record in baseball, have the most infinitesimal playoff odds. 5. Beltran's been terrific. A bad 2006 would have buried him after that disappointing 2005. But he came though big time. I guess there are some that can't get the taste of 2005 out of their mouths, but they really should have opened their eyes in 2006.
  6. I'll have to take another look at his post. He didn't say anything about his shoe or his armpit, did he?
  7. I count eleven Hall of Famers in that photo: Mays, Schmidt, Anderson, Lasorda, Bench, Seaver, Winfield, Carlton, Sutton, Morgan, and Gossage. Three of them are managers or coaches, so that makes eight players. I don't think any of the others are likely to get in, unless Pete Rose someday gets absolution, which I highly doubt. I wonder if eight Hall of Famers is a high or low (or average) number? It seems a little low to me. I suspect it might be even lower today, with more teams that need to be represented. You probably had higher numbers of Famers before expansion, and fewer today.
  8. No, it won't catch JReyes. I'd have to edit that in the spreadsheet. If you want to edit your vote and save me the trouble, it would be appreciated. Thanks.
  9. I agree. A manager should argue for his team, and I can understand that that could sometimes lead to yelling. (Although it really shouldn't.) But grown men shouldn't throw tantrums. I wouldn't tolerate a tantrum from my seven-year-old. From an adult it's really absurd. And the armpit thing was way over the line. He deserves a month's suspension.
  10. Voting for Wednesday night's win over the Giants at Shea will close some time over the weekend: Schaefer POTG 7/9/08 - Mets 5, Giants 0
  11. You'd think so, wouldn't you?

  14. The city should evict them. Make them immediately move back to RFK until they pay their rent.
  15. The Mets, at the moment, are only three games behind Milwaukee in the Wild Card race. I know the conventional wisdom is that the NL Card will come out of the Central, but it won't necessarily happen that way. The Wild Card is a possible alternative path to the playoffs for the Mets. Winning the division would certainly be more satisfying, though. Especially if it keeps Philadelphia out of the postseason.
  16. Exactly. If the Mets take on salary, they'll be able to give up less talent.
  17. KC wrote: Alou = torn hammy, out for season - Omar on SNY At least this gives us some clarity. Is there an AL contender who needs pitching badly enough to trade a solid outfielder for Oliver Perez? If the player we get back is good enough, I'd have to consider that deal. We can't count on continued visits from "Good Ollie" and right now his trade value is as high as it's likely to get.
  18. Benjamin Grimm wrote: To get to 88 wins, they'd have to go 43-30 (.589) and to get to 91, they'd have to go 46-27 (.630). I think our best hope is to have the Phillies win 84 games or fewer, which seems unlikely, but it would allow the Mets to win with 85 games. (40-33, .548) For this to happen, the Phils would have to go 36-36 (.500). Now, three days later, for the Mets to get to 88 wins they need to go 40 and 30 (.571). 91 wins would be 43-27 (.614). 85 wins would require 37-33 (a mere .529). To keep the Phillies to 84 wins, they'd have to go 34-35. (.493)
  19. Tatis 4 Schoeneweis 1 Muniz 1 Wright 2 Beltran 1 Sanchez 0.5 Wagner 0.5
  20. It might. If an outfielder wins the voting, Hurdle may decide to pick Wright.
  21. Sorry, no. But I like the Tatis homer even though I didn't smell it in advance.
  22. He was hitting for Muniz, not Maine. But I do agree that it's a waste of a bench player, a commodity that's become too rare with the growth of the standard pitching staff.

  25. Ninth-inning closers play for stats more than anyone else. They generally only get called into games when it's a cherished "save situation." And we know that Wagner has his sites on Cooperstown. And he won't get there unless he piles up enough saves.
