  1. Why is (a) so outrageously unlikely? It it worth spending $2.7 million in order to get two draft picks? I wouldn't think so. I'd place him on the irrevocable waivers and try to save the $2.7 million. I assume that Wagner would still be able to reject the move, though? But on the chance that he'd get claimed by a team that he prefers to Boston, I'd give it a try.
  2. Well, to be fair, Namor isn't pinning specific injuries to the medical staff. The Mets should, I think, bring in a third party to review the decisions made, both by the doctors and the people who are supposed to listen to the doctors, and see if the team was well served this year, and was just unlucky, or if there's something more. It's easy to say FIRE THEM ALL, and it's also easy to say that that's an overreaction. But it's also possible that somebody should be fired. A season-end review is certainly in order.
  3. Holy crap. I was blissfully ignorant of this. Until now, of course.
  4. Yeah, whatever his 'demands' might be, hopefully he'll give in a bit in order to get himself onto a contending team.
  5. Wagner has leverage because he has a no-trade clause in his contract.

Fair point. And I'd be lying if I said this killed me as much as even the Pittsburgh game from June. These games don't sting anymore. But on a lazy Sunday, driving back from southern NJ, Howie and Whatshisface dragged me back somewhat in for a day. Plus, losing to Philly when you've got a legitimate shot at the end that didn't seem at all possible an hour earlier... doesn't it ache something fierce? (Spoiling the Phils is about the only thing I'm really hoping for, Mets-wise, for the season's remainder. Hate is all I have left.) metsmarathon Aug 24 2009 10:08 AM it does. but this is an ache i can live with - an 'oh well, you got me' kind of ache. like when your pitcher puts his pitch right were he wanted to, and the batter still manages to push a soft fly ball into short right field. you do your best, and if they beat you they beat you. its like that pitch vlad hit a week or so ago that actually bounced in front of home plate - i mean, what are you going to do there but say, "damn, he got me there"? dgwphotography Aug 24 2009 01:58 PM ="metsmarathon":1snick2b]history jumped up and bit us on the ass. 7. This was Sheffield's third win of the year. The previous two were on June 26 and June 29. This is the first time he was the POTG in a game that the Mets won.

  13. I thought he had cleared waivers. (I guess I was wrong.) Sucks if there's only one team that they can trade him to. Doesn't give the Mets much leverage in getting the best possible player in return. Well, I guess it gives them some. The other team may need Billy Wagner more than the Mets need the prospect. But that other team may not need a reliever but is just trying to keep the competition from getting him.
  14. I was going to comment on his age. At 22, is he older than most of the rest of the FSL? (I'm not saying he is, I'm just asking.) If he is, that could make his numbers a little less impressive.
  15. I think I'd consider taking a chance and offering arbitration. Even if he accepts, his arbitration-awarded contract wouldn't have a no-trade, right? And he's not 5-and-10 yet.
  16. And I'd bring him back with a role matching the expectations that were had for him in 2009; a pinch-hitter, fourth/fifth outfielder. Not as a starting regular left fielder.
  17. And that reminds me... When I was in college, I had a friend who was flirting with this girl, and it seemed to be going pretty well, when for no explicable reason, he told her, "I have a five-year-old son named Otis." (He didn't.) She visibly lost interest in him. So he frantically told her that it was just a joke, that he didn't really have a son named Otis. But it was too late. She either figured that he was suddenly denying his little boy's existence, or he was some kind of a nut who makes up fictional kids named Otis to impress girls. (I guess the second part was actually true.) Note to you single guys out there: The fictional-son-named-Otis line... not a good idea.
  18. ="LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr"]I wouldn't mind seeing a cheap, lefty-mashing running mate next campaign. Would Trot Nixon be an appropriate running mate for someone named Ike? Or should we dust off Otis Nixon?
  19. I wouldn't call him Joe McEwing either. (It would get confusing, since that's not his name.) But I think that's the best way to use him, for 2010, at least, until he proves that he deserves a regular position. Find eight other guys to man the starting positions, and keep Murphy around as a super-sub, one who will play often enough to get 250 to 300 at bats. Give him the chance to prove that he can do more, without counting on him to do more. If he's anointed the Mets starting 1B this winter, it will be a pretty discouraging sign.
  20. Maybe it's because Murphy looked really good late last season, and we still want him to be the guy that it looked like he might be. And part of it is we're probably paying less attention this season, when he's not doing so great, than we did last year, when the games mattered more and he was looking good. I don't want to give up on him yet, but I also don't think the Mets should pencil him in as the answer at any one position next year. And especially not at a high-offense position like first base. Keep him around. Make him a Joe McEwing. And if he proves that he can be more than that, then reevaluate.

OlerudOwned Aug 20 2009 11:14 PM Seeing Wagner pitch so well bummed me out even more about all the injuries.
