  1. Rosemary getting raped by the devil could probably count as a scary scene. Cassavetes really was fantastic, by the way. My favorite line in the film, I think, was when Rosemary wanted to change to a different obstetrician, because the one that she had, Dr. Sapirstein, had been ignoring her extreme pain for three months. Her husband, Guy, exclaims, "But that wouldn't be fair to Sapirstein!" He was such a creepy character... pimping his wife's womb to Satan so that he could get TV and movie parts.
  2. That's a new one on me: a guy posing as his own erection.
  3. Now that's a fun fact! Just curious: How do you define home grown? Does Ron Darling qualify? How about Steve Henderson?
  4. I watched this just last night. (It was recently shown on HBO Signature.) It wasn't the first time I had seen Rosemary's Baby, but the last time was so long ago that last night's viewing was almost like watching for the first time. I know that this isn't exactly current, but figured it might be a fun movie to talk about.
  5. Sounds like something out of The United States of Tara.
  6. Yeah! Our award is better!
  7. I agree with that.
  8. To be fair, though, I get the sense that many of the new-agers are equally dismissive of the value of decades of watching, calling, and playing professionally.
  9. I'm guessing this stuff just makes his eyes glaze over. To be candid, it makes my eyes glaze over, though I know I'm capable of understanding this stuff and would have eagerly devoured it all about 25 years ago. But I don't make a living talking about baseball. If I did, I'd make more of an effort to familiarize myself with these new metrics. Maybe Gary did make that effort, but his eyes glazed over because he's not able to grasp it. Maybe it's all to mathy for him. Also, it's okay to not make an effort to understand stuff, but it's a whole nother thing to scoff at stuff you don't understand. There's way too much of that going around. (It's what drives most of the political discourse, such as it is.)
  10. Voting for last Thursday night's series-opening loss to the Nationals will close on Wednesday morning. Please try to get any remaining votes in some time today. Schaefer POTG 7/1/10 - Nationals 2, Mets 1 The remaining three games that were played in D.C. will close on Thursday. I'll post the official announcement, with links, in this thread tomorrow.
  11. Nieve 1 PFeliciano 0.5 Valdes 0.5 Bay 1 Pagan 2 Barajas 1 Cora 2 Wright 2
  12. Too bad Mike Pelfrey wasn't similarly motivated.
  13. Let's remember that players named "Feliciano" need to have their first initial included.
  14. I don't think he belongs either, but all those World Series titles will probably get him in.
  15. The Second Spitter wrote: I'm sure lots of things look like Schaefer votes to you. Are you coming? No, I'm going to have to take a zero.
  16. These look like Schaefer votes.
  17. Isn't his son about eight months old or something? And Pelfrey has some connections. (And money, too!) I'm sure he can get some pretty good seats.
  18. Box score Dessens 1 Rodriguez 1 Takahashi 1 Bay 3.5 Pagan 1.3 Davis 1.2 Wright 1
  19. Can't... watch... Can't... look away...
  20. Those white caps look silly combined with road grey uniforms. They should make white versions for the home team and grey for the visitors.
  21. More photos, taken outside Hiram Bithorn before the games. The first two were taken on Sunday, when we were there to pick up the tickets. (That's why there's no crowd.) And here's Billy Marlin. He's probably reacting to my Mets cap, but his posture also could mean he's wondering why there are no Marlins fans at these "home games." Given the Mets nature of the crowd, we really should have had Mr. Met on site.
  22. If I was a reporter, here's what I would have asked Rodriguez: "How would you have reacted if Jerry had brought in the left-hander, Feliciano, to pitch to Adam Dunn?"
  23. Wow, Gary Carter looks awful.
  24. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: what was the other place you stayed in? Better or worse than Caribe? Was looking at that one on the net for our trip. We moved to the La Concha on Condado Beach. Much nicer, largely because of the location. It's directly on the ocean beach, and it's in a neighborhood with easily accessible shopping and restaurants. On previous trips to San Juan we had stayed at the Marriott in Condado, but we couldn't get a room there this time. Isla Verde is another San Juan spot with hotels, but I've never stayed there or even seen the 'hood, so I don't know what that's like. But we really wanted to leave the Caribe because it was kind of confining. Unless you wanted to eat the Hilton's food, you had to either grab something at the one mini-mart, or get in your car and drive somewhere else. And the food at the Hilton was very expensive. A glass of orange juice? Eight bucks. I'm not sure when you're planning to go to Puerto Rico, but when I was previously there, in 2002 and 2003, it was much cheaper to go after May 1. Our original plan, for 2002, was to go during the last week of April, but I then discovered that on May 1, the hotel prices dropped nearly in half. I don't know if that's still the case, though, but I suspect it probably is.
