New York Mets Minor League Report: Two More HRs For MJ Melendez; Strong Finish By Gabe Davis

Syracuse got another big night at the plate from MJ Melendez as its defeated St. Paul 9-7 on Saturday. Melendez homered twice for a second consecutive game and drove in three runs. His first homer proved to be the game-winning hit as it broke a 7-7 tie in the seventh inning. His second was an insurance tally in the top of the ninth.

Melendez also drove in a run with a groundout in a three-run Syracuse first inning. He is 8-for-18 (.444 average) with four home runs and 10 RBIs in the first five games of the series, which will conclude Sunday afternoon.

Billy Amick homered against his former organization (Minnesota Twins), while Ronny Mauricio (two hits, two RBIs) and Vidal Brujan (three hits, RBI) also had big games.

While the Triple-A team was scoring in bunches, the Double-A squad was failing to score at all. Binghamton was shut out 1-0 at Portland. The game's only run came on a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first. The Rumble Ponies will conclude the -- series and their season -- Sunday afternoon in Maine,

Melendez Decides Slugfest For Syracuse

Melendez launched his 21st and 22nd homers with Syracuse in his final two trips to the plate. His first-pitch dinger in the seventh put the Mets up 8-7.

He doubled his pleasure in the ninth with a drive to right off ex-big league reliever Julian Merryweather.

Melendez's other RBI came in the middle of an early Syracuse rally. D'Andre Smith and Émilien Pitre opened the game with walks, Ronny Mauricio singled to right to score Smith, and he took second on a throwing error by the right fielder, Melendez grounded out to bring in Pitre, and Bruján singled home Mauricio.

Syracuse added two more runs in the second on RBI singles by Pitre and Mauricio. Amick made it 7-3 in the third as he hit his seventh homer in 18 games at Triple-A, an opposite-field blast to right following a Brujan single.

The Mets used eight pitchers in a bullpen game. Ofreidy Gómez started and Jefry Yan finished. Yan got the final out for the save. Dylan Ross (4-1) earned the win with a scoreless sixth.

Davis Shrugs Off Ambush, Turns In Strong Outing

Davis (1-1) responded well to seeing his first pitch of the game leave the yard, as he kept it 1-0 before leaving in the fifth. In all, he allowed four hits and a walk and struck out three over a career-high 4 2/3 innings. He threw 64 pitches, 40 for strikes (62.5 percent).

The Mets acquired the 22-year-old right-hander from the Chicago White Sox in the Huascar Brazoban trade. Chicago drafted him in the fifth round last year out of Oklahoma State. He was a teammate of Nolan McLean and Carson Benge with the Cowboys. The Chicago and New York organizations both were careful with his workload in his debut season; Davis pitched 83 1/3 innings over 24 games (23 starts).

His surface numbers between High-A to Double-A were just OK: a 4,94 ERA, 24.4 percent strikeout rate, 9.6 percent walk rate, 4.1 percent home run rate and .800 opponents’ OPS.

Davis got no support from his offense in this one, try as it might. The Rumble Ponies stranded runners in each of the first four innings and had two more runners thrown out on the bases.
