New York Mets Minor League Report: Tong Strong In Nightcap; Mets Add To System In A.J. Minter Trade

Jonah Tong isn't going anywhere at the MLB trade deadline, except maybe back to New York.

With the big-league Mets having officially begun their pitching sell-off, the time is growing closer for Tong (No. 1 in Grand Central Mets' latest prospect Top 20) to get another shot in the Show. If he does receive the call in the next few days, he'll be coming in with confidence, based off his outing Thursday night.

Tong allowed two hits, walked two and struck out seven over five scoreless innings as he led Triple-A Syracuse to a 2-0 win and a doubleheader split with Rochester. His fastball topped out at 97.9 mph, per MLB Pipeline. He was efficient, with 56 strikes in 89 pitches (63 percent). That's significant for a pitcher who struggles to throw strikes: his Triple-A walk rate this year is a too-high 13.3 percent, although the 27.8 percent strikeout rate mitigates it some.

Tong produced uninspiring results (1.50 WHIP, 5.11 FIP inflated by a 14.9 percent walk rate) in his three long-relief outings for New York in May and June. Once the Mets clear out Freddy Peralta, Clay Holmes, Brooks Raley and perhaps Huascar Brazoban and Luke Weaver by the 6 p.m. ET Monday deadline, they can offer him an opportunity to improve at the uppermost level over the final seven weeks.

The parent Mets added a pair of prospects Thursday in their postgame trade of left-handed reliever A.J. Minter to the Minnesota Twins. New York acquired infielders Bruin Agbayani (yes, the son of former Mets outfielder Benny Agbayani) and Billy Amick. GCM's Cade Lalim analyzed the move here.

Binghamton lost to Reading 7-2. Mitch Voit scored both Rumble Ponies runs in his second Double-A game. Binghamton was held to three hits.

Brooklyn got another three-run home run from Daiverson Gutierrez as it routed Winston-Salem 8-1. Starter Emilio Obispo struck out eight over 4 2/3 innings. Chase Meggers collected three hits.

St. Lucie squandered an early lead and lost to Dunedin 6-3. Elian Peña doubled and drove in a run.

DSL Mets Blue lost 13-2 to the DSL NYY Bombers. Henry Manrique had three hits and an RBI. DSL Mets Orange lost 6-3 to DSL Blue Jays Red. Wandy Asigen (No. 12) homered, singled and stole a base.

Wenninger Stumbles Early In Syracuse's Game 1 Loss

Mets starter Jack Wenninger, GCM's No. 2-ranked prospect, quickly put his team in a hole in the opener. He gave up a leadoff double in the bottom of the first, then walked the next hitter and threw a wild pitch to push the lead runner to third. A line drive that deflected off his glove for an infield single brought home the first run. For good measure, third baseman Zack Short committed a throwing error on the play to put another runner into scoring position. A second wild pitch brought home a second run, and a run-scoring groundout made it 3-0.

Wenninger lasted 3 2/3 innings. He was charged with six runs (all earned), seven hits, four walks, and five strikeouts.

Mike Tauchman went 3-for-3 as he played in another minor league rehab game. He scored the Mets' only run, coming home on an RBI single by Jihwan Bae in the sixth inning.

Two In Second Stand Up In Game 2

Both of the game's runs scored in the top of the second. Christian Arroyo led off the inning with a home run, his eighth of the season. MJ Melendez followed with a single, moved to second on a groundout, and then scored on a Bae single.

Arroyo finished 2-for-3. Melendez reached base three times with a single and two walks. 

The bullpen preserved the shutout with two innings of one-hit ball. Jefry Yan struck out the side in the sixth, and Ben Simon closed it out for his fourth save despite allowing a double in the seventh.

Voit Keeps Buzzing, But Binghamton Silent Otherwise

Another game, another night of Mitch Voit (No. 7) making things happen. He led off the contest with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a balk. Voit walked again in the fifth, advanced on a groundout, and came home when Nick Lorusso reached on a fielding error, tying the game 2-2.

It was all Fightin' Phils from there. They scored four runs off relievers Gabriel Rodriguez and Justin Armbruester in the sixth to take control of the game. Rodriguez walked in a run to break the tie, and then threw a wild pitch for another run. After a strikeout, Armbruester entered and gave up a two-run single that deflected off his glove.

Corey Collins, Matt Rudick, and Wyatt Young had Binghamton's hits. Rudick's double was the lone extra-base knock. The Ponies drew eight walks in the game, but the extra traffic didn't lead to runs because they went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Gutierrez Got 'Em Again

Gutierrez made it back-to-back days with three-run shots, although the one on Thursday was far less dramatic than his walk-off blast Wednesday. Nonetheless, it pushed the Cyclones ahead 4-0 in the first inning.

It came after Jacob Reimer (No. 6) homered with one out for a 1-0 lead.

Colin Houck tripled to open the second and scored on Chase Meggers' single for a 5-0 lead. Brooklyn tacked on a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Obispo was sharp but just failed to qualify for the win. He was taken out after 4 2/3 innings of one-hit, one-walk ball. He was charged with a run after Gregori Louis walked in an inherited runner with two outs. 

Brooklyn finished with 14 hits, eight of them for extra bases (five doubles, a triple, and two homers). Andy Ibáñez, who, like Tauchman, is on extended injury rehab, had two hits, drove in a run and scored a run.

St. Lucie Lead Short-Lived Vs. Dunedin

St. Lucie built a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Consecutive singles by Kooper Schulte, Elian Peña (No. 4), and Aiden Robbins plated the first run, and a throwing error on Robbins' hit brought in the second.

Dunedin answered with four in the bottom half of the inning against starter Joel Lara. A double, a walk, and a bunt single loaded the bases with none out, and then a two-run single tied the game. The go-ahead run came home on a wild pitch, and a fourth run scored on a Lara throwing error.

Peña doubled home Vladi Gomez to make it 5-3 in the seventh. Dunedin got that run back in the bottom half.
