New York Mets Minor League Report: Ronny Mauricio Starts September With A Bang; Binghamton, St. Lucie Rally

Ronny Mauricio did not receive a September callup from the New York Mets. The club went with speedy outfielder Nick Morabito as the 14th position player instead. If Mauricio was looking to deliver a response Tuesday, he came in loud and clear.

Mauricio clubbed a solo home run off the scoreboard in left-center field in the bottom of the first inning to put the Mets in front against Rochester. The blast off former Washington Nationals starter DJ Herz was the opening statement in a 7-4 Mets victory.

The timing of the homer was interesting, and so was the fact it came from the right side, the switch-hitting Mauricio’s weaker side. It was his third home run in 66 plate appearances batting right-handed with Syracuse this season. It was his 17th homer overall.

Syracuse added four runs in the second and another run in the third to open a 6-0 lead. Jonathan Santucci was the beneficiary of the run support. He earned his first Triple-A with five innings of two-run ball.

Binghamton rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh and then hung on to beat New Hampshire 4-3. Corey Collins put the Rumble Ponies ahead with a two-run double.

Brooklyn lost twice, 3-2 in 10 innings in the completion of a game suspended July 5 and 6-4 in the regularly scheduled contest. Aiden Robbins homered on his first night as a Cyclone (more about that below).

St. Lucie rallied for a 7-6 victory over Jupiter. Ryan Tayman tied the game in the seventh with a three-run homer, and the Mets took the lead in the eighth on four walks.

Syracuse Gets The Jump On Rochester

Syracuse added to Mauricio’s homer by scoring four runs before recording an out in the second. Eric Wagaman and Billy Amick led off with back-to-back homers for a 3-0 advantage. Nick Lorusso singled, Hayden Senger doubled, and Zack Short doubled home both to widen the lead to 5-0. Lorusso and Senger finished with three hits apiece.

Amick made it 6-0 in third with a sacrifice fly that brought in MJ Melendez. Rochester cut the lead to 6-4 in the seventh, but Senger provided insurance in the eighth with an RBI single.

Santucci allowed two runs and five hits. He walked one, struck out six and threw 52 of 79 pitches (65.8 percent) for strikes. The runs came on solo homers in the fourth. Matt Seelinger, Ben Simon and Brian Metoyer combined to record the final 12 outs, seven via strikeout.

Collins Delivers Big Hit For Rumble Ponies

Binghamton trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Eli Serrano III walked to open the inning. John Bay reached on a fielder's choice, with Serrano advancing to third on a throwing error by New Hampshire's first baseman. Collins then doubled between the first baseman and the bag to bring home both runners.

JT Benson followed with a sacrifice bunt, which New Hampshire's pitcher threw away for an error. Collins scored from second to make it 4-2.

Carlos Guzman, the third of five Binghamton pitchers, got credit for the win after throwing a scoreless seventh. He became the pitcher of record after Binghamton's rally in the bottom half. Garrett Stratton allowed an unearned run in the ninth, aided by his own throwing error, before stranding the bases loaded to earn his sixth save.

Binghamton got on the board in the fifth after falling behind 2-0. Chris Suero led off with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a groundout by Serrano, and scored on a double by Bay.

Gary Gill Hill started and went the first four innings. He allowed two runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out four.

Two Months Later, Brooklyn Loses Road Game At Home

The game started July 5 at Frederick and ended Tuesday at Brooklyn, as this week's set was the next scheduled series between the clubs. No one-day makeup trips in High-A.

The game was suspended because of rain in the bottom of the eighth with the score 2-2. The Keys won the completion in the bottom of the 10th. A sacrifice bunt advanced the ghost runner to third base, and a single drove him in.

Mitch Voit, who's now playing for Double-A Binghamton, drove in both Brooklyn runs back in July with a single in the fifth and a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Robert Stock, who's now pitching for New York, started this game. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five over 2 2/3 innings.

Robbins, Jimenez HRs Get Cyclones Closer Late

One of the fun things about suspended games: A player’s debut often changes to a weird date. Because Robbins entered the suspended game when it resumed Tuesday, his official pro debut is now July 5, six days before he was selected by the Mets in the third round of this year’s draft. He struck out in his only plate appearance.

He made up for that by going deep in the sixth inning of the regular contest, which, by rule, was shortened to seven innings. The homer cut the Cyclones’ deficit to 6-3.

Antonio Jimenez homered in the seventh to make it 6-4. He also played in the resumption, so he is now credited with having played for Brooklyn and St. Lucie on the same day.

Brooklyn led 2-0 after one. Elian. Peña tripled with one out, and Robbins singled him home to open the scoring. Trey Snyder followed with an infield single. After a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Yonatan Henriquez lifted a sacrifice fly for a two-run advantage.

Starter Nicolas Carreno could not make the runs stand up. He lasted just 1 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on one hit and four walks.

Tayman Gets St. Lucie Even, Then Mets Stroll Past Jupiter

The Mets trailed 6-3 after surrendering three runs in the top of the seventh, Tayman delivered an emphatic response in the bottom half.

After the first two batters were retired, Branny De Oleo walked and Bruin Agbayani doubled to get the tying run to the plate. Tayman homered to left on a 1-0 pitch to make the score 6-6.

Kuhio Aloy led off the eighth with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Yovanny Rodriguez walked to put two on with none out. Julio Zayas struck out and Jeremy Rodriguez popped out, but then Jack Toomey walked to load the bases and De Oleo walked on a 3-2 pitch to force in Aloy.

St. Lucie's run in the eighth made a winner of Zack Mack, the sixth of seven Mets pitchers, He gave up a hit and walk over 1 1/3 scoreless innings, Miguel Mejias struck out two in the ninth as he notched his sixth save.

Agbayani made his Mets organizational debut and played seven innings at second base. The son of former New York outfielder Benny Agbayani had been out of action since mid-May with a shoulder injury. The Mets acquired him along with Amick from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for left-hander A.J. Minter on July 31.
