Been an up and down year for the soon-to-be 36 y/o Wainwright. He's 9-5 but with a 5.48 ERA and 1.55 WHIP as he seems to alternate good performances with ones where he gets smacked around.
At one point towards the end of May he had 4 straight outings where he allowed a total of 1 run, but since then has coughed up 9, then 2, then 9 again, then 2, 2, and 6.
He notched a win in his last outing as part of the four game split the Cards just had with the Marlins but only because he was given 14 runs while he struggled to get through the minimum five.
The short outing in general is becoming the norm for him these days; he hasn't once gone beyond 7 this year and in more than half his outings (9 of 17) he's lasted 5 innings or less.

Wheeler = 33 pitches thru 2 innings, Wainwright = 33 pitches thru 3, despite both allowing only 1 baserunner
Seen this movie before.

I feel like TJ could have smothered that ball and kept the run from coming around

And BTW, nice job representing by The 7 Line Army in the outfield! An oasis of blue within the sea of red today.

Dammit d'Arnaud

I hate to say it but I have more confidence in Rene Rivera's hitting than d'Arnaud's.
Is Salas done? I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and blame it on overuse.

Yeah but dArnaud a better pitcher than Salas.

Salas is terrible. We got a dead cat bounce last year.

True but that's a low bar.

I think that if Montero passes this test, he's in line to get Salas' innings out of the pen.

Salas, I fear, may be looking at a release.

Is this team streaky or what?

This game is a prime example of one that was sailing along for six innings ... but that was more than an hour ago.
Once we hit the 7th though it was like the brakes got slammed on and the last 12 outs have gone by at a snail's pace.

The NYM 'basket of deplorables' bullpen hasn't helped.

The Mets are essentially a mid-level team. The streaks often depend upon the opponent. The Mets aren't good enough to beat the better teams (Dodgers, Nationals, Diamondbacks, & Rockies) so they tend to go on losing streaks against them, but they are good enough to beat the weak, bottom tier teams (Phillies, Giants, Reds, & Padres) when their wins tend to mount up. Against the other mid-level teams, victory is roughly a 50/50 proposition (unless of course, Montero is starting, then the odds drop dramatically).
