Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 So apparently the New York-Penn League season began last night. I mean, it was supposed to begin, but the Brooklyn/Staten Island opener was rained out. That might be a good thing, as the Mets haven't signed any of their draft choices yet. Is that typical? Starting the short season leagues before having any of the new glory boys under contract to show off?Anyhow, up until yesterday, the Cyclones had a roster of, like five guys for new manager Edgardo Alfonzo to deploy. But a late flurry of transactions brought a bunch of guys up off of the Kingsport and GCL rosters, and demoted a handful of guys from St. Lucie and Columbia, and voila! We have something like a minor league team. But it's only 24 guys (and I'm not sure Woodmansee is actually with them at the current moment—available information is ambiguous) out of the limit of 35, so look for a lot of fluidity in the first two weeks.Apart from high end draftees, we're hoping on possibly seeing a glimpse of top 2016 pick Anthony Kay before the season is out, but I'm not betting on it, considering his TJ surgery was October 3. Also, two José Medinas!!Hey, check it out! They're dressing Edgardo in #13! Unfortunately, they don't afford the same courtesy to Royce Ring, who word #20 and #29 in his Mets days. Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 The Clones was the name of my science fiction club's softball team at John Dewey high school, back in Coney. Our jerseys all had the same number (3.14)
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 On my way to the Cyclones game now.

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 Cyclones look just awful this year. We left after 7, they were down 6-1 or 7-1, and their second baseman, who wears #1, was pitching since the 3 relievers they trotted out (especially Horne and Aldridge) couldn't get anyone out and turned a 1-1 game into a mess. The second baseman/pitcher, Franlkin Correa, hit consecutive batters as Hudson Valley had a big ole inning.Cyclones made 5 errors, 2 by newly drafted 3rd baseman Carl Stajduhar. It didn't help their first baseman was a short reserve catcher, Jose Maria. Their centerfielder, Ian Strom, had a chance to throw out a guy at home from shallow CF and spiked it way offline. One of the Cyclones foolishly got caught off second base on a dumb fielder's choice. If you were Edgardo Alfonzo, you've have chewed them out afterward.Only encouraging thing for the Clones was catcher Carlos Sanchez, a trim, tall Venezuealan who threw out 2 basestealers, hit a double, and scored a run. Starting pitcher was Juan Carlos Medina, a lefthanded Mexican, who was pretty good but betrayed by the D.Beyond that the whole franchise appears to be cruising on their rep for hospitality. They were out of pilsner draft and the IPA was skunky. They were out of chocolate soft-serve. They didn't have cheese to make nachos. The taco stand ran out of chicken. (I didn't try and buy all those things but I was with a million kids from Lunchpail's school. Invite 100s of kids and not have ice cream?) The scorecard magazine was shot through with careless typos. Now maybe arriving signed guys makes the on-field product a little better but what a shit effort tonight. Get it together, Cyclones.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 8, 2017 Author Posted July 8, 2017 A loss today to Staten Island drops the Cylcotrons to a pastry 4-13, while the Junior Yankees sore to 14-2.Lean times in the Mets minors these days. Kicking ass in the DSL, though.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 21, 2017 Author Posted August 21, 2017 Brooklyn is, like, Casey Stengel-era Mets bad. They went up 4-0 in the top half of the first yesterday and still lost 13-10. The loss dropped them to 15-42. That's a .263 winning percentage.Tim Teufel managed a Sand Gnat team that bad back in 2007 or so, but it's been a while since a group of Mets prospects were forced to take their medicine so completely.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 24, 2017 Author Posted August 24, 2017 An 8-0 loss dropped the 'Clones to .250 tonight. 15-45. Equalling the 1962 Mets winning percentage.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 7, 2017 Author Posted September 7, 2017 Get out and see the Cyclones tonight at 6:00 for their season finale. It's been a miserable year for a Brooklyn team that has been mostly good throughout its existence, but a kid named Noah Syndergaard is expected to take the hill for the Clones, and that's something.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 8, 2017 Author Posted September 8, 2017 A less-than-encouraging appearance in Brooklyn for the big guy, going 2.0 innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits and two walks, striking out three, as the Cyclones end their disastrous season with an 8-4 loss, finishing at 24-52 (.316).
