I don't know how much of this is by design, but it's been distinctive of late how much the good teams are playing a different brand of ball from the bad teams. League-wide yesterday, the [crossout]Braves[/crossout] Nats falling to the Mets marked the only game in which a team in the top half of the standings recorded a loss.

Colorado W
Washington [crossout]W[/crossout] L
Milwaukee W
Arizona W
Los Angeles W
Chicago W
New York W
Atlanta W
St. Louis L
Pittsburgh L
Miami L
Cincinnati L
San Diego L
San Francisco L
Philadelphia L

The Mets getting buried in the division race is suddenly a face looming less large than them (and the rest of the league) getting buried in the Wild Card race, as the two leaders (Arizona and Los Angeles) have each won nine of ten, without quite managing to catch Colorado, who is streaking along with five wins in a row of their own. The three juggernauts in a single division is bound to slow down when they return to division play, but while San Diego may get modestly stronger as the season progresses, San Francisco looks to be preparing for a veteran sell-off.

As much as I'd hate to see the Mets disappear, it'll be that much more disappointing if the whole league appears wrapped up by the fourth of July. These Mets games against the Dodgers may be more critical than the four-game set against Washington. At least we'll see Washington some more.

I'm irritated that there are so many teams competing with us for the first pick next year.

All this winning is terrible.

Please forgive me. I typed this just as I was running out to a memorial mass for a colleague. But I've been generally sloppy lately. I also failed to check "L" next to the Nats.

Forgiven, even if you were just running out for a sandwich.

Condolences.
