Mets in Vegas 2017

The Mets, acutely aware of the dearth of outfield talent through their system, are refusing unearned social promotions for the likes of Kyle Johnson and Champ Stuart, and are letting Las Vegas start the season with only three outfielders, granting them a third catcher (Jeff Glenn) and a 13th pitcher (Logan Taylor) instead. I don't know how long that'll last but Brandon Nimmo on the DL might well have something to do with it.

DL'd players aren't shown below, but count Seth Lugo and Tom Gorzelanny among disabled 51's, or at least disabled guys who otherwise may have been bound for Vegas.

Cool numerical fact: Donavan Hand is wearing 51 for the 51s and so is the only guy who wears the full team name on the shirt.

Adam Wilk threw six shutout innings in his first start, but was hit hard over four innings in his second.

Wilfredo Boscan shut down the El Paso Chihuahuas in his first start. No runs in five innings. He's perhaps the most attractive option if Harvey has to miss a start. But he's not on the roster. Gilmartin is, but he got hit hard his first time out.

Which brings them back to Montero.

Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith yesterday: 4-8, 3 BBs, 2 2Bs, 1 HR, 3 RS, and 4 RBI, including the walkoff game-winner in the 11th. They're regularly batting 3rd and 4th for the Vegas squad and are two of the top players in the league. Sacramento's Christian Arroyo is probably the only thing standing between Rosario and the PCL Player of the Month, and Arroyo's played both in AA and the bigs already, so he's only gotten into 16 PCL games, compared with Rosario's 24, so I'm hacking into the PCL database and awarding the trophy to Rosario.

Vegas' 9-1 win yesterday stopped a three-game skid, their fourth win in their last 10 games, and bumping them to 14-15 in their up-and-down season, but leaving them only a game out of first in the tightly bunched Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division. They were joined for a few days by rehabbing guest stars Wilmer Flores and Brandon Nimmo. The latter of the two may well remain when his rehab is up—he's come up cold, hitting a paltry 1-for-17—but I'd like to see him sooner rather than later.

Rosario and Smith have cooled a little, though for Amed Rosario, cooling a little merely means a batting average falling below .400. They're still a devastating combo throught the middle of the lineup, along with Travis Tajeiron and Josh Rodriguez:

Taijeron: .299 / .391 / .557 // .948
Rosario: .381 / .432 / .495 // .927
Smith: .310 / .360 / .457 // .817
Rodriguez: .293 / .359 / .448 //.808

The addition of Blake Beavan gives them a retread flyer on the pitching side to go along with Desmond Jennings on the hitting side. Jennings is just starting to hit. Beavan makes his 51 debut today.

An interesting head-scratcher is the presence over the last week of outfielder Arnaldo Berrios. Berrios' previous highest level of experience was 37 games last season with Brooklyn, registering the uninspiring line of .185 / .239 / .218 // .457. I'd be far more expecting a release than a promotion all the way to AAA if I was Berry. He's been an unsurprising 1-9 as a 51 so far, and I'm guessing they just wanted to get him a little action somewhere but good heavens.

Berry, by the way, is a graduate of the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico.

One odd note I read the other day was that Rosario had racked up something like six errors in an eight-game span, certainly not what you'd expect from a guy whose defense was said to be ML-ready long
before his bat started to catch up but, unless that suddenly signals the start of a trend, I think we can just write it off to 'Shit Happens'

Watched the Vegas Mini Mets against our own Albuquerque Isod'ohpes last night. Amed had a crappy game, going 0-5, but he is tall and graceful at short. I think that oh-fer dropped him to like .365.

Gotta say, except for maybe running, everything Dom Smith does looks pretty effortless. Baseball looks natural and easy for him. Wish he'd hit some bombs already.

Desmond Jennings, formerly a 'good major leaguer', is in the Met org and was the 6 hitter. I'd completely forgotten about that dude.

The tiny bit I/we saw of him in spring training showed that too, particularly on defense.
Watching TJ Rivera at 1B this week shows him, and usually us, holding his breath with every throw in the dirt; he's made all the plays but you worry about the outcome until the out call is made.
Smith looked like he makes tough scoops while doing intricate footwork in his sleep.

Top prospect Amed Rosario has been playing third base for Las Vegas the past few games (since Cabrera got hurt). He is a shortstop and reports since the Mets signed him say he is a good fielder at that position. The Mets have Wilmer and TJ to play third but not many young players who can play shortstop well behind the aging Cabrera and Reyes. I'm wonder why Amed has been moved off short.
Has anyone read or heard a reason?

Just two games out of 38 at 3B (acc. to BB-Ref) maybe 3 if he played there last night and they've yet to fully update all the stats. Been at SS every other time.
Rosario's going to be a ML SS, of that there seems little doubt. If he fails at the big league level it's going to be because, for whatever reason, his bat doesn't translate, not because of sub-par defense.

I suspect this plan is more a case to keep Cecchini's SS glove from rusting than anything else as he's the one who's played the few games there that Rosario hasn't. According to Gary last night, Asst GM John
Ricco said that if Cabrera does need to be DL'd over this thumb issue then Rosario is NOT going to be the call-up. Not sure that Cecchini will be either as some arm, probably Smoker, is more needed right now
but if they do need Cecchini at some point or want to be able to flip him as a SS then it's worth their while to keep his SS skillzzz from atrophying.

The story of the Las Vegas 51s in 2017 continues to be Dominic Smith and Amed Rosario. Vegas manager Pedro Lopez seemingly gets to start his day penciling in 5-to-7 total bases between those two guys and maybe a couple of walks. That's pretty sweet. Yeah, it's the Pacific Coast League, where Eric Young, Jr. is currently hitting .354 and slugging .513, but it's always more satisfying to see your youngest players turning the corner. Rosario is currently 14th in the circuit in OPS at .935, just behind veteran teammate Travis Taijeron at .937. Smith sits 30th at .839. Rosario's lofty .360 batting average is only fifth in the league, where the leader is hitting .400. I think we have to go all the way back to Gary Redus to find a minor leaguer who has hit .400 over a full season. If gravity doesn't disqualify you, promotion will.

And the theme of promotion hangs over the two young Vegans. I like to think that restraint by the Mets is less about Super Two status (I'm tempted to name them The Super Two when they are called up, but ... pass), but about making sure they won't find their way back.

Other interesting news: Josh Smoker has now made two starts, and while going only 4 2/3 and 4 innings, respectively, in the two outings, he's given up a total of one run between them. He's stuck out eight and walked two. Encouraging! Or at least intriguing! Remember that Smoker was signed as a refugee from the Indy leagues, so anything we get (or have gotten) from him is like found money.

Brandon Nimmo is finally starting to find his stroke again, going 8 for his last 18 with four walks, three doubles, and a homer. Another hit or two and he's off the Interstate. He and Desmond Jennings are alternating in center, which suggests either could be the next outfielder up. Similarly, Gavin Cecchini has been seeing time at short, perhaps foretelling a callup to come.

While Vegas has been porpoising up and down, never quite going on extended winning streaks or losing jags, they've lost six of the last 10, just enough to slide into fourth (and last) in the PCL Pacific Southern Division, at six games out. The medical emergencies in Flushing have certainly weakened them over the first six weeks of the season, but hopefully they'll benefit the 51s in the weeks or two, as Nimmo (initially), d'Arnaud, and Matz have joined the team on rehab stints, with (hopefully) Lugo, Cabrera, and Céspedes (among others?) to follow.

I was holding off on updating for Vegas until the roster had settled, but the flurry of transactions this weekend has left them with 27 or 28 guys on teh roster for a few days now. I don't know how that works. I assume somebody has been deactivated, but it hasn't been reported.

The 51s are backsliding, man. Having lost four of their last 10, they're now 10 games off the pace in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division. And that's not 10 games back in second. That's 10 games back in fourth. And that's not fourth of five or fourth of six. That's fourth of four. That's last, man.

The return of Matt Reynolds might help. He was hitting .300 / .364 / .360 // .724 when he left, but he was playing left field back then, with the infield crowded, and I don't need to tell you, that's not a very chunky .300 for the PCL. Travis Taijeron still leads the team in homers, but he had been a little slumpy. The guy has been hitting for two and a half years, so he may be feeling the weight of AAA fatigue. He's 28 and still waiting for his first call.

I think he's pulling out, though. He recently pulled a nice trick of putting up the same line four games in a row: 1-4 with a double and two RBI. Four games in a row. Kewl.

Brandon Nimmo has pulled out of his hellacious start, and is now up to .220 / .357 / .376 // .733. I want him bad.

The rotation will be bolstered by the return of Tyler Pill, but he hasn't started yet since his return. I think he goes Thursday. And hopefully Daniel Bard joins the team soon.

Want a new name with rising stock? How about Kyle Regnault? Lefty reliever Kyle started the season with Binghamton, where his treatment of Eastern League hitters was simply unreasonable. 11 games. 15 1/3 innings. Two earned runs for a 1.17 ERA. You want an opponent batting average? How about .167?

Yeah, he walked six. Big whoop. He also whiffed 18. So then, he gets called up to AAA, and that average drops to .157! So far, in 7 1/3 innings in the PCL, his first earned run allowed doesn't exist. Goose eggs.

He's still giving up walks, so we may not see him soon, but remember the name: Kyle Regnault.

The Rivera promotion, a couple of retroactive DL assignments, and suddenly the 51s are back down to a regulation 25 men. It's like somebody at the league office noticed they'd been playing with a 28-guy roster for a few days, and they were all "No we weren't! Some of the guys we didn't use were ... hurt! You didn't get the paperwork? I thought I told my girl to send it! Yeah, they're hurt real bad!"

Losing Cecchini, Nimmo, and Reynolds to promotion in quick succession wasn't enough for the 51s' offense. Today also saw the release of veteran Desmond Jennings. I'm guessing not getting a callup after Lagares went down was the writing on the wall for him, and he asked for a release hoping to catch on with a team that's thinner in the outfield.

A very 2017 Mets loss for Vegas today. They gave up three in the first, and though they rallied in the ninth, they went down 4-3 with the tying run on base. New starter Mitch Atkins recovered from the rocky first to go 5 1/3 giving up only one more unearned run, but alas, the damage was done.

The loss was the seventh in the last 10 for the 51s, dropping them deep into 4th and last in the PCL Southern Division, 13 games back, and even 8 1/2 games out of third. It's about pride at this point, gentlemen.

It's notable that Chasen Bradford got the call this time instead of frequent contributor to the 2017 Mets Hansel Robles. And that's because Hansel hasn't had a hand on things since his demotion, putting up a 7.53 ERA in 11 appearances out of the pen. The staff to the last man is getting beat pretty hard, with all ERA's over four (most considerably so) with the exceptions of roster yo-yo Tyler Pill, and reliever Kyle Regnault, who has put up an ERA of just 0.66 in 13 2/3 innings since coming up from Binghamton, but it's largely illusory, as Kyle has walked 11.

As noted earlier, Amed Rosario has fallen back to earth. I don't know if that somehow vindicates Sandy Alderson and his decision not to promote the young man, but he and Dominic Smith now have surprisingly similar stat lines:

Rosario: .319 / .362 / .472 // .834 with 7 homers and 48 RBI, mostly batting third.
Smith: .320 / .371 / .472 // .843 with 8 homers and 45 RBI, mostly batting fourth.

The hardest stop bat in the line-up (.324 / .359 / .556 // .915 in 108 AB), interestingly enough, has been that of Kevin Plawecki.

but [Rosario] and Dominic Smith now have surprisingly similar stat lines:

Rosario: .319 / .362 / .472 // .834 with 7 homers and 48 RBI, mostly batting third.
Smith: .320 / .371 / .472 // .843 with 8 homers and 45 RBI, mostly batting fourth.

That's almost freaky similar.

The comparison still favors Rosario due to the positional value.
At this point one has to think that the timing of Rosario's promotion depends on what happens to one or all of the middle-aged middle-infielders currently in residence -- namely Cabrera, Walker,
and Reyes -- over the next five weeks.
I'm less sure that we'll see Smith this season even if Duda winds up getting deadline-dealt.

Up 8-0 in the middle of the sixth in Tacoma, Las Vegas loses 9-8 to the Raniers, who scored nine runs in three innings (they didn't even need the bottom of the ninth), off Tyler Pill (who had been pitching shutout ball), Logan Taylor, and Alberto Baldonado.

Bad bullpenning. Whatever help the Mets may need doesn't seem to be coming from Vegas.

Yeah, Hansel Robles continuing to pitch even worse in AAA than he did at the ML level isn't an encouraging sign:
13 ER on 9 BBs + 20 hits (incl. 4 HRs) in 14 innings isn't good no matter what league/stadium it's in.

Hitting Coach Jack Voigt has a lot of guys socking the ball for Las Vegas, and he's been rewarded by being named hitting coach for the PCL All-Stars in the upcoming AAA All-Star Game. I assume this position boils down to filling out the order in which players take batting practice, but good for him.

He's joined on the roster by his shortstop and #3 hitter Amed Rosario ... and nobody else.
