Yesterday, JCL was docked a point for violating the two-in-a-row rule, which requires contestants to wait at least 10 minutes before posting a consecutive guess. JCL's consecutive posts came in at 10:22 AM and then at 10:31 AM -- nine minutes apart instead of the required 10. Of course, we don't know precisely how the computer program that runs this forum calculates the time stamp because it provides us info for the hours and minutes, but not for seconds. Are the seconds rounded up or down to the nearest minute? Or are they simply ignored? We don't know, but it's possible that JCL's penalized post violated the 10 minute rule by as little as a fraction of a second. It was a costly error because Alvarez is worth two points. JCL's penalty resulted in a three-point swing without which, JCL would have seven points instead of four, trailing the leaders by just one point.

Ouch.

Maybe LWFS can explain this Vanis Takis stuff. Now that I recall, I do remember that phrase having come up in the forum from time to time. Another CPF phrase I never got is "avi". Every couple of months or so, someone writes "avi" in their post. Sometimes, that word is the entire post. What's that about?

Hahaha... I'm not the best story teller here, and maybe someone can
elaborate... some of the real old-timers here met on Mets Online (often
referred to as Mofo) and there was a dude named Avi that had some kind
of posting melt down one day or over several days and then the next day
all of his crazy posts were replaced with .'s and the phrase 'don't Avi that
post' was born.

It was like chum for the sharks, he spent a good few hours getting hammered on it, first arrogantly defending the list and eventually giving way until within a few hours he was so defeated he'd replaced each and every one of his posts with a single period, because the forum required that something be left in the message field. He never returned. It was a beating somewhat akin to Neegan encountering the Alexandrians.

What a time when we could afford to cull the herd on purpose.

So now if someone should decide to erase a post for whatever reason, the cryptic "Avi wuz here" message could show up as a replacement. Or occasionally someone might write something along the lines of: I had a response all typed out on this topic but I wasn't able to make the point I wanted so I just Avi'd it.


What was amazing is that he took the time and trouble to go back and erase every single post he ever made in an attempt to scrub clean any evidence of his brief time there.
And yet despite all that effort, that name that existed for maybe a week on a decade and a half ago different version of this forum, still lives on!!

The days of the MOFO was so long ago, I still have a hard time believing I have been hanging around on the internet many of you for all these years. The MOFO was a hectic, crowded site and the members could be a pretty cruel place at times. The waters of the Crane Pool are generally quite placid and tranquil in comparison.

I generally try to read all posts in a thread. Each time I come to the forum, I pick up reading with any new posts since my last visit. I generally try to read through all the new posts in a thread before commenting. It helps to keep me from asking questions or making points that have already been discussed or answered previously in the thread.

I certainly read far more than I post, but I feel I learn a lot here. I'm not sure how important the information I gain here is in the general scheme of life, but I definitely learn things and get to see things from the perspective of others. Besides, I have no one else to discuss baseball with. They could cancel MLB and I doubt that many of my friends would care or even notice.
