I went with the deGrom cover too, but it wasn't a clear decision. I like them both nearly the same.

Me too. In the end I went with the guy who doesn't beat his wife.

5-0 so far. Would expect it to be closer.

The quintessential Newsday back page headline, from December 1991:

"Sabes a Met"

Not "Bret a Met" or "Bret's a Met". Perhaps it was character count, but how do you pass up a perfect rhyme and go with something so dull by comparison? That's always been Newsday to me, never quite striking the tabloid chord, rarely threading the needle of tasteful cleverness (you can do a whiz-bang back page without a urinal).

"In Complete Control" was fine, safe, unmemorable -- unlike the game it described. As much as I liked deGrom's one-hitter, I went with the News here as a protest vote of sorts. It wasn't spectacular, but it told me the story in a nutshell.

Your post made me curious to see how the other two papers covered deGrom's shutout on the back page. Both gave the main focus to the Yankees' win, which is why neither cover was in the Derby. In smaller sub-headlines, the News had "1-deFUL!" and the Post had "ONE FOR deBOOKS!"

Another Newsday cover advances to the third round; this is the fourth to do so and Newsday has won four of the last six matchups. Nine of the "Sweet Sixteen" positions have been secured: Four for the Daily News, four for Newsday, and one for the New York Post.

The last remaining Jacob deGrom cover has ousted the last remaining Jose Reyes cover, which means that Jose's picture will not be hanging high above Maja's desk.
