Found a book vendor at an indoor flea market today that had a lot of
baseball books. I've been selling Mets stuff more than buying these days
but I do intend to keep adding to my Mets bookshelf and doing so cheaply
is even better. Five books for $7, such a deal...

The cover is familiar to me, looking forward to reading it. I have the newer book,
Baseball Forever, but have only read parts of it.

The Gil book was the best of the haul, it's like brand new.

If the Mets did throw this crazy casserole dish lid on top of the stadium, how much earlier to do you think Shea would've met the wrecking ball than it did IRL? (I say earlier for sure)

If we got a new stadium in 1999 instead of 2009, would it be cooler/lamer than Citi?

Got two books today from my favorite used-book vendor, Silverman's
Mets Essential and Harrelson's Turning Two. I was just flipping through
Bud's book and found a $20 bill!

No, regular twenty. The book's not old, 2012... looks barely read but it
was nice for someone to stick it in there for the next owner!

My question about the Shea Stadium dome is "How were they going to get that done for only $ 9 million?"
Even with inflation, that wouldn't have paid for the architectural drawings back then.
OK, slightly hyperbolic*. But at 10:1 inflation since then, could we get that done for $90 million today? I sincerely doubt it.

Way earlier. Part of Shea's problem was neglect and with another huge thing to neglect, sooner.

The Mets' new park, expected to open in 2006, would resemble Ebbets Field, the Brooklyn Dodgers' fabled ballpark that was torn down when the team left for Los Angeles after the 1957 season. The new stadium would be built in a parking lot adjacent to Shea Stadium, officials said. * The New York Mets acquired outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash.

From a 2001 article, so probably roughly the same. Two years earlier is pre-9/11 and maybe would've been done before Bush killed the economy and such, but likely would've had the same people making the decisions. Maybe it's a little more 'techie' as part of the dotcom boom, especially if it was like 97-98 instead of 99?

Or who knows, depending on the timing you might end up coupled with the Jets again on a West Side project.

If I'm remembering correctly, the Mets at first were looking at something resembling what became Citi Field with the rotunda, but with a sliding roof like the Marlins have. I think there was even some plan where the field itself slid outside of the stadium so the concrete base could be used for concerts and all kinds off things.

The original Shea replacement was announced in April 1998, projected to open in 2002. SkyDome with an Ebbets exterior was its point of reference, with the grass sliding in and out like University of Phoenix Stadium would eventually feature. Eleven years later...something only vaguely like it appeared.

My son enjoyed the Howie Karpin 162-0 book. It's an easy book to pick up at any time to read about a specific game.
