Newsday's Dave Lennon is reporting that a single good outing from Matz may be enough to get him back in the big league rotation despite having only 3 innings under his belt since ST.
I was figuring more on at least 2 AAA starts, but even that probably pushes his due date back to maybe the Pitt series at CitiField the first weekend in June.
At this point anything would help.

A curious side-effect — possibly even a benefit — of a run of stinkiness is that bullpen roles erode. We have a nominal closer, who could get yanked at any moment, and LOOGy, who may be too effective (relative to the other options) to limit to LOOGy status. So anybody can get thrown into the breach on any night. Anybody can be a hero.

If Smoker doesn't see action in the next day or two, perhaps speculation of throwing him a start will bubble up.

When you're a roster backender like Milone, you stub your toe and it's a quick trip to DL. Do not pass the trainer's office, do not collect ibuprofen. And you can hardly complain. It guarantees you at least 10 more days and probably more of MLB pay. Beats a DFA.

Montero in the rotation is mostly just a placeholder. I doubt he starts anytime soon. Milone's knee probably foreshadows a quicker return for Matz.

I'm guessing that, by the end of the season, this will be the most days they've had three catchers on the roster since, like, 1983. Think Nimmo, Sandy.

Carter, Lyons and Sasser held down spots from start to finish in 1988 -- three catchers on a 24-man roster that won a division title.

Why is Montero still on the team. How bad does he have to be to get demoted? With injuries going through the Mets roster like "pink eye" at a day care center, Montero of all people, remains healthy.* He just sucks like a Hoover. I know the Mets need arms, but I can't believe Montero is still in New York. Must make Goeddel feel like crap, to know he is stuck in Vegas while Montero throws batting practice every time he takes the mound for the Mets.

*I in know way wish ill health or injury on anyone, no matter how poorly they perform.

Not sure what that 60-day DL assignment does to Lugo's status.

My initial assumption was that the fact that he already made a rehab start in a real game (as opposed to extended ST) meant that he couldn't be transferred to the 60 without, in effect, restarting the
clock all over again and making him not available until 60 days from now, but it doesn't seem logical that they'd do that. If it's merely 60 days from whenever they first DL'd him then that time
is just about up anyway and this is essentially a bookkeeping thing.

Yeah, it's the latter. Backdated to the end of Spring Training, so it's hardly a delay at all. And he can still rehab.

Meanwhile, playing time is about to get much tougher for Curtis Granderson to come by.

On the other hand he's still just 21 y/o (was still several months away from turning 18 when drafted) and has 48 innings under his belt so far in 2017 which is only slightly less than
what he threw from 2014-2016 combined (41 + 12 + 9) so maybe it's just a case of catching up and shedding rust.

Ike, btw, is hitting .214 w/3 HRs in 56 ABs for AAA Oklahoma City in the LAD chain.

No problem with Reynolds going down, as he has no role other than "guy who only starts in a doubleheader," but Pill needs to do more to establish himself.

Seems like TJ was a victim of numbers with this demotion, rather than for cause. Or, am I missing something?

Numbers and also available options.
Same as Pill vis-a-vis Neil Ramirez. One can be demoted without exposure to waivers and the other can't.
Not that those are always good ideas for long-term roster make-up, but in the short term it can save you a player you might need later on.
