Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 And Ynoa goes today. This can't go wrong.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 How does Matz do a 30 pitch bullpen Wednesday and start Friday. His pitch count will be 50?
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 Say goodbye to Jacob until '17.He now can go to the 60-day DL which opens a spot on the 40-man roster. Perhaps they should get Bud Norris who was DFA'd today by LAD. He's not great but they might need a starter if Matz can't go.

The Mets could, potentially, get through the NLDS with three starters. If Syndergaard starts the wild card game (as I assume he will, unless the race remains tight and the Mets aren't able to arrange their rotation), he'd be able to start NLDS Game 3 on four days rest. If Colon is the Game 1 starter in the NLDS, they could start him on three days rest in Game 4.Wild Card Game: Wednesday, 10/5, SyndergaardNLDS Game 1: Friday, 10/7, ColonNLDS Game 2: Saturday, 10/8, Matz or Lugo or GsellmanNLDS Game 3: Monday, 10/10, SyndergaardNLDS Game 4: Tuesday, 10/11, Colon (three days rest)NLDS Game 5: Thursday, 10/13, Game 3 starterWould they do this? I don't know. I figure that if any starter is going to pitch on three days rest, it would be Colon. I doubt they'd do it with Syndergaard or Matz. If Matz is unavailable, having Lugo or Gsellman start the decisive Game 5 of the NLDS is far from optimal, but it may be the best option. The alternative is a four-man rotation, where the fourth starter pitches Game 4 and Colon goes in Game 5. I'd be more willing to try that if the Mets have won two of the first three games. This feels premature.

Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 According to Roger Rubin at ESPN, Steven Matz is not likely to pitch again this season and if by chance he does, it will be out of the bullpen. I doubt there are many here surprised by this announcement. The vaunted young rotation his been decimated. I am amazed the team is even in contention for a wildcard spot.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 And in a shocking turn of events, Terry Collins has announced that Steven Matz is probably done for the season. Yesterday, Collins had said that Matz, if he returned, would only pitch out of the bullpen.Collins did leave open the idea that Matz might pitch in an instructional league soon, and so he might be available if the team went deep into the post-season. But even then it would only be during afternoon games, on Tuesdays, and would only face "guys who suck anyway".
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Psyched for that dramatic Matz/Tebow matchup. Red-hot lefty-on-lefty action.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Author Posted September 27, 2016 DiComo on mlb.com: Mets starter Steven Matz will undergo season-ending surgery imminently to remove a bone spur from his left elbow, according to a team source. The club has not confirmed the news.So it's essentially nothing additional on top of what we already knew, just that it apparently can't be put off until the off-season. Or rather that IT IS the off-season starting now as far as Matz is concerned.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Yeah, I guess they figured he wasn't going to pitch again anyway so they might as well get the surgery done so he can begin healing all the sooner so that he'll be ready for whatever injury comes next.If the Mets do have a postseason roster this year it will be very different from last year's.
