Not a lot of digital ink has been given to it (that I've noticed, anyhow), but the Giants yesterday became the first team in 40 years to have the designated hitter available to them, but turn in a lineup card at the start of the game that instead included the pitcher's name in the batting lineup — Madison Bumgarner's name, to be specific.

Bumgarner rewarded the Giants with a double and a run score as the Giants rolled out 12 runs in their victory over the DH-advantaged Athletics. Interestingly, Bummy's stat line —1-4 with a double and a run, was exactly the same as the A's' (is that expressed correctly?) DH, Billy Butler.

Forty cranebucks to whoever can name the last pitcher who hit so effectively that he compelled his team to turn in a DH-free lineup card.

Didn't remember Ken Brett, but I do recall Billy Martin using Rick Rhoden as a DH one game--and batting him 7th!

*Rhoden was not the starting pitcher that day.

Brett it is, gifted with enough of his brother's DNA to hit .262 / .291 /.406 // .698 over 373 plate appearances (spent too much of his career in the American League) in a not particularly offensive era. Bonus: he appeared on Fantasy Island.

Never, to my knowledge, crapped himself in the lobby of a casino.

Trust me, once you've done this 6-8 times, all the shame really just melts away. Much like a certain oversoiled pair of dainties.
