Neither Matz nor Syndergaard will go under the knife for their bone spur issues according to Sandy A. - a statement which I assume is true right up until the moment that it no longer is. Hopefully if that time does come it'll be around Turkey time.
The Mets/Sandy had previously acknowledged that Matz is pitching with a spur and now say that Noah has a "very small" one, one which causes him less discomfort than does Matz's.

Of immediate news: Matz will have his start pushed back to Thursday -- meaning that Logan Verrett goes against the Nats tomorrow -- while everything appears to be status quo with Syndergaard.

Any bone spur causing discomfort (or worse, pain) is no good. It means that something is rubbing against it. And the something is either a ligament or tendon that is on its way to being torn by the rubbing. The spur does not decrease in size over time, nor doen the thing rubbing against it move and re-seat itself to a safer place.
To eliminate the spur, it has to be "filed down" or (more drastic) cut off.
Not a major procedure, but necessary to avoid future problems that might require more drastic surgery.
The MRI each pitcher took should show the Doctors how soon treatment should be scheduled for each pitcher.
And Sandy should listen to the doctors.

Yes, Sandy's comment that it is a "small one" as you quoted. I tried to explain that there is no such thing. Any bone spur can lead to more serious damage. If the doctors are saying operate now, Sandy shouldn't belittle their diagnosis.
