OF/1B Brandon Wood to StL from Cleveland
Cards have been searching for a more permanent solution to 1B since Matt Adams was injured.

Brandon Moss you mean.

Yeah, him.

Just as I'm typing that I'm also hearing that Alex Wood is part of the re-vamped Marlins/Dodgers trade that now involves the Braves.

which has been going on since early yesterday. Michael Morse made the last out in the Marlins game, so presumably not official yet either.

And to bolster their pitching staff (especially with word today that Michael Pineda will NOT make tonight's start and is going on the DL) the Yanquis were able to land ...

... perennially disappointing (and former #2 overall pick) Dustin Ackley from Seattle.
Oh did I mention that he's a 2B/LF ?
Two NYY pro(su)spects going the other way.

They also just DFA'd Chris Capuano after his disaster start the other night (the one where they bailed him out with 21 unanswered runs).
At this point I think I'm 3rd in line to start their game on Sunday.

Brian Sabean takes a leak.

Giants GM Brian Sabean swung a trade for RHP Mike Leake sending two prospects to Cincinnati to make the deal.
Leake was supposedly on the Yanx radar but current rumors have them going after more relievers like maybe Kimbrel.

Impossible by definition to avoid spreading news of that trade Leake.

There was an old Saturday Night Live sketch with Harry Shearer as a host of a radio station with an "all-time" format, just reading the time over and over again, taking calls asking for the hour, just repeating over and over again, "It's three minutes after the hour... three minutes after the hours... it's thr... OH, HEY! it's FOUR minutes after the hour."

That's what #mets twitter reads like right now.

Trade deadline winners and losers

Loser: New York Mets' fans angst. The Gomez trade ... Flores' tears ... fears that the Wilpons were too cheap to pick up a bat ... that brutal loss to the Padres on Thursday ... it was worse than taking the subway in 100-degree temperatues. And then ...

Winner: New York Mets fans. In the end, they get Yoenis Cespedes ... and didn't have to give up Zack Wheeler, like they would have in the Gomez deal from a couple of days ago. Cespedes is just a rental, but holding on to Wheeler is a good thing. Cespedes was hot in July -- .291, eight home runs -- and his current .323 OBP is higher than 2013 and 2014, but he's a streaky hitter and probably should remain in left field even though he played a little center his first year with the A's.

The residue of the flurry of deals at the deadline is the flurry of DFAs that follows as teams make room for their shiny new things.

It may take years to untangle that massive Braves/Dodgers/Marlins deal which originally grew out of the aborted Latos/Morse trade.
All that is known right now is that the Dodgers took on and/or paid out a helluva lotta money in this transaction. Guess a $200+ mil payroll just doesn't buy as complete a team as it used to.

Braves to Dodgers:
Jose Peraza (AAA pitcher - Top 100 prospect in pre-season 2015)
Bronson Arroyo (hasn't played all year - essentially a salary dump of approx $8 mil, split between teams undisclosed)
Luis Avilan (ML LH reliever)
Jim Johnson (ML reliever - twice a 50-save man w/Balt)
Alex Wood (LH starter)

Marlins to Dodgers:
Mat Latos (we all know him - big, blond ape with all the silly tats. Signed thru this year only)
Mike Morse (a salary dump who was promptly released by LA. Already picked up by Pitt, Dodgers will pay ~$10.5 mil for the remainder of this season plus 2016)

Dodgers to Braves:
Paco Rodriguez (ML LH reliever)
Zachary Bird (A-ball pitcher)
Hector Olivera (currently in AAA OK City - Cuban emigre signed to a six year/$62.5 mil deal in May '15. Dodgers will pay entire $28 mil signing bonus.)

Dodgers to Marlins:
Victor Araujo (A-ball reliever)
Jeff Brigham (A-ball pitcher)
Kevin Guzman (A-ball pitcher)

Marlins to Braves:
2016 competitive balance round A pick to the Braves (probably an upper-30s/lower-40s pick next year)

And as noted at the bottom of the previous page, the Dodgers ended up DFA-ing five different dudes (but not Carl Crawford) in the flurry.

Heck, they just benched a guy (cf Joc Pederson) two weeks after he was in the All Star Game.

  • I can confirm for you now that the Mets and [Yoenis] Cespedes is out. So that is out. So I dont know where it went; it doesnt matter. Its out. Theres no Cespedes. So hes off the list. Itll now be elsewhere. So it will not be him. Scratch him off the list.

Heres an on-air, show-ending quote from an expert among experts on Wednesday. Guess who said it:

Other inside, all-knowing claims made by Mike Francesa included that neither the Rockies Troy Tulowitzki nor the Brewers Carlos Gomez would be traded

There's nothing Mushnick loves more than catching Francesa (or Fran-Say-So as he often calls him) in loud pronouncements seemingly born of insider authority that turn out to be unfounded.

I think this may get lost in a lot of the Flores love that is going on, but this was pretty cool, too. I've never heard of anyone else doing it.

Marc Carig of Newsday wrote:
"I told him I know it's a business and he has a job to do, but I'd really like to be here because of what's about to happen," Wheeler told Newsday on Sunday. "I've been here a couple of years and want to see it through."

He spoke about why he made the call. "I know that doesn't happen every day and I was nervous about doing it," said Wheeler, still a Met. "But I figured it was the best way to get it across that I wanted to stay and be a part of this team's winning future."

As a fan, I'm glad Wheeler wants to stay because I've always wanted him around and would have been disappointed if he'd been traded.

That's what I think they understand. This year may or may not play out gloriously, but there's an extended golden era we're just now on the threshold of.
