Merandy Gonazlez pitches with the Gulf Coast Mets. He's 19 years old, has 30 career games under his belt, and I can't even find a picture of him online. But he just pitched a seven-inning no-hitter.

Walked one and struck out six. The G-Mets made two errors behind him, which implies he pitched well enough to stretch his effectiveness at least 2/3 of an inning further. In fact, the last time he faced the GCL Marlins (the Guppies?) back on June 22, he threw five hitless innings. So I think it's safe to say that somebody has somebody else's number. That's 12 innings of no-hit, one walk, 13 strikeout ball between the two starts.

Merandy. Make a note.

And he's not adopted! The race to the AaPF is on!

I applied and was immediately rejected... something about an
outstanding warrant in Boston from the early 80's...

Hi, I'm Merandy Gonzalez. How many games have I appeared in this season for the Columbia Fireflies? Three.

How many wins do I have? Three.

How many innings have I pitched? 20 and 2/3.

How many runzzz have I allowed? Zero. What's a run?

How many dudes have I struck out? Eighteen. Alice Cooper sings about the number of dudes I've struck out. That's how many.

And how many have I walked? One.

Combine that with 10 hits allowed, and no hit batsmen, and I'm walking around the Sally League with a 0.532 WHIP.

What's a Tebow? Are you serious? There's some guy named "Tebow" on my team? Never heard of him.

Merandy kills it again, pitching 7 2/3 scoreless in a 5-0 win over the Asheville Tourists. He's now 4-0 and he is THE MAN WITHOUT AN ERA!

Sixth shoutout of the year for the Fireflies.

You know what we haven't seen in this forum for a long time? The phrase "Bring him up now. He can't be any worse that what we already have."

I don't think that's true, of course, but it used to be a common refrain.

Threw six innings of shutout ball tonight, giving up but three hits and a single walk, while striking out five. He advances his record to a record 8-1, with a 1.56 ERA. You may look shocked.

Merandy, along with his unadopted brother Jordan Humphreys, gets promoted from Columbia to St. Lucie. I don't expect he'll ever be back.

His first half numbers: 8-1, 1.55 ERA in 69 2/3 innings with 13 walks and 65 strikeouts. That's some baseball.

Merandy is totally this year's P.J. Conlon. After seven scoreless his last time out, he's doing the unthinkable, actually improving on his 8-1/1.55 performanc in his first half with Columbia, going 4-1/1.52 so far with St. Lucie. Only four homers in 99 innings. Yeah, it's A-Ball, but that combines with low walk rates and opponent batting averages too, and it tracks across his career.

His 1.54 combined ERA is second in all full-season affiliated baseball, behind only Phillies prospect Ranger Suarez, currently rocking an NCAA Softball-esque 1.42 ERA also between the South Atlantic League and the Florida State League.

Merandy putting up a 0.98 ERA over his first 18.1 innings in the Miami system. His 11 strikeouts and five walks won't knock you out, but, well, there's no bad way to a 0.98 ERA.

Merandy gets promoted to the bigs by the Marlins, making him the first-ever Columbia Firefly to reach the majors.

This is your benchmark, A.J. Ramos. Outpitch Merandy.
