Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Discussion in tonight's game thread reminded me of why I am always watching for triple plays. I found the game I was looking for, and turned out it wasn't the game in Philly that Ordonez hit a home run -- that was 2001.The Game I was thinking of was May of 1999, and it wasn't around the horn from 3rd base, but a liner to SS. Alfonzo and Olerud were in motion and that was that. The other triple play I think of in Mets history was the Francouer game-ending unassisted triple play of 2009, also against the Phillies. What do you think of when you think of Mets and triple plays?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Yeah, I was at the Rey-O homer game and remembered a distinctly TP-less night.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 (edited) The 23-inning game vs. the Giants in 1964 featured a 14th-inning triple play on a Orlando Cepeda liner to McMillan catching Alou and Willie Mays running.April of 1965: Johnny Lewis to Cannizaro to Roy McMillan: the rare 9-2-6 TP catches Bob Aspromonte trying to advance on a sac fly. Both these plays have highlight calls (Nelson and Kiner, respectively) preserved on the incomparable "Miracle Mets" LP Edited August 5, 2014 by Guest
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 The most recent TP turned against the Mets was in 2010, a Tejada grounder to third with runners on first and second. That game is more memorable for Jon Niese's finest ever pitching performance, a one hit shutout against the Padres. If memory serves, a first inning hit was the only Padre baserunner.I believe the most recent Mets triple play was started by Angel Pagan at Nationals Park, with the Mets benefiting from a delayed out call on a potentially trapped ball.
