And just as I was about to start a thread saying that I was ready to cut ties with Abreu, the Mets beat me to it.
Nieuwenhuis, rather than den Dekker, recalled.

Fine with that, but I'd be happy to do the same with our two other erstwhile leftfielders too and call up dD and Brownie.

Then by all means start a thread saying that you were ready to cut ties with Chris Young. Hey, it's worth a shot.

Mike Vaccaro (NY Post) agrees with you if that's any consolation, saying it's time to cut bait on CY.

He isnt a one-man band of futility, though it does feel that way sometimes. Chris Young isnt all that ails the Mets. He isnt the only muffled bat in the order. He isnt the one who threw the wild pitch that tied the game; Jeurys Familia did that. He didnt serve up the game-winner to Pablo Sandoval; Jenrry Mejia did that.
So maybe doing what needs to be done with Young will feel like the worst kind of scape-goating, blaming him for things that arent of his doing, identifying one crack in a driveway in Sausalito as the source of the San Andreas Fault. Maybe thatll make Sandy Alderson feel sad.
Doesnt matter.

And he goes on from there. Nothing harsh, more just an acknowledgment that, after a 250 AB trial, it isn't working.

I guess the alternatives are either den Dekker or, if they're leery of becoming overly LHB-heavy, Andrew Brown.
I wonder if either Young would have some trade value, even if just a smidgen? CY would shirley clear waivers and EYJ (you could flip him in favor of MdD) probably would as well.
Now that all the deadline frenzy stuff has passed, deals for guys like this are probably more likely in August as some contending team suddenly has to cover an injury (McCutcheon just went down for example) or simply decides they could use an extra PH to make the opposing manager think twice about the LHP he's got in there © or to use an occasional spark plug type (E)
Maybe this is what Sandy has in mind.

Yes I think they could get *something* for both Youngs -- next year's reserve catcher, maybe, a lefty reliever, etc etc

Soitenly releasing CY so as to punish him and/or "prove" that the Mets aren't afraid to eat a shit contract (do they really need to prove this??) is stoopit.

You know a guy is not hitting when he is getting praised in the booth for bringing a mentor type role to the club.....wants to coach, Mets should get him a gig forthwith.

The thing is, the 'veteran-ness' of a guy like him is only worthwhile if he does well at those things where savvy vets supposedly have an edge: like pinch-hitting.
But he had a horrible track record in the PH role - yeah, it's only a small sample, but anything in that role is going to be a small sample so if you're going to count the good times you have to also hand out demerits for the bad. Then throw in that his one HR was from his very first week here, that he was being yanked for LHPs, that he doesn't field or run particularly well and you find yourself running out of reasons to keep him around. Nieuwy and/or MdD can K against LHPs just as well as Abreu, but at least they brings legs and gloves to the party.
