Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 1, 2014 Author Posted August 1, 2014 That's a whole lot of salary the Phils are going to be laying out for past performances over the next few years. We kinda needed Cliff Lee to help the Phils pick off teams ahead of the Mets.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 1, 2014 Author Posted August 1, 2014 Not a "deal" per se, but the suddenly stacked-with-pitchin' Oakland Athletics released Jimmy Johnson outright, eating a third of this $10 million deal. The guy had saved 101 games the last two years. Reason number 29 in why you don't invest big in closers.

Weird move, especially considering how well they've been playing for the last two months.

He's got five rings, baby!"
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 No doubt Drew is a better glove man than St Derek of Jeteria and will start at SS on the odd Jeter day off/DH start, but the Yanx don't really swap out Jeter mid-game. He doesn't run as well as he used to but he still moves better than most of the Clydesdales they have on that squad; it's the AL so you don't ever double-switch; and if they want to improve their 'D' there are several guys they'd move before him.Plus Jeter has never played an inning in his entire career at a position other than SS (and the occasional DH) and, although no one there will say so, I suspect he desperately wants to retire with that on his record.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 Post-deadliney deals:Marlins deal RHP Jacob Turner to the Cubs in exchange for two Class-A relievers.Turner is a former #9 overall pick (Tigers - 2009) out of a St Louis HS and was consistently a Top-25 prospect over the 2010-2012 period. The Cubs will mark the 23 y/o Turner's 3rd organization, having been dealt to Miami in the Anibal Sanchez deal in mid-2012, and they plan to use him in their ML rotation starting immediately.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Jon Heyman reporting that Jon Niese and Curtis Granderson have cleared waivers. No word (yet) on whether Bartolo Colon has cleared. This very likely means nothing at all, but, for whatever little it's worth, there you have it.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Granderson definitely means nothing. Niese probably means nothing as, even if the Mets were inclined to deal him in an attempt for an SS or LF, I suspect that would be more an off-season type of thing than a stretch-drive move.Colon would mean something as it would expand the pool of trading partners. He could still be dealt w/o clearing waivers but only to the claiming team and that claiming team might just be pulling a blocking move.

Of course, Vizquel was the one he played at second.

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 Verlander goes down for Tigers. Wonder if Colon would interest them?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 No damage to Verlander's shoulder, "only 1 to 2 starts" missed ... at least as of now. IOW, more deGrom than Santana so far.The bigger problem for Detroit is that Verlander wasn't that good prior to this problem. And that Anibal Sanchez is DL'd. And that the just acquired Jochim Soria is DL'd. And that Joe Nathan is 64 y/o and blows about as many saves and he saves. And ...

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 21, 2014 Author Posted August 21, 2014 Gordon Beckham goes from the Whities to the Angels for cash and a PtBNL.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Beckham was an 8th overall draft pick back in 2008 as a SS out of Univ of Georgia*. But he didn't stay at SS and now nearly six full seasons of .244/.306/.374 later it was probably time for the ChiSox to cut ties. What I remember when he first came up was his big, blondish mop of Kennedy-esque hair. Maybe cropping as he got older is what became his undoing, who knows.* although oddly enough was not the first SS from the state of Georgia or even the first Beckham picked that year. The unrelated Tim Beckham, a SS out of a Georgia HS, was the 1/1 pick that year by Tampa and, until looking him up just now, I had thought he was among the rare few 1/1 picks never to play in the majors. But it turns out he did get a cuppa coffee (7 ABs) late last year. He's just now getting back to minor league work after a lengthy injury rehab but is almost certain never to be the star you'd want out of a top pick.
