batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Can't say I've been watching these games much more than to catch a random at bat or two while whizzing by channel surfing. But thumbs up to Pittsburgh for the retro Crawfords unis and early 70's Stargell/Clemente polyester pullover tops. Same goes for the Royal Giants retros the Mets were wearing, even though Pittsburgh, as the host team, paid for those. Don't expect that from the Mets for their home fans. The seven thousand bucks the Mets'd hafta spend might break their budget for acquiring a key mid-season piece for the stretch run.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Sound pretty tuned in for someone who wants to sound tuned out.

Were the original Royal Giants unis really that blue? Or do modern materials make it look different?
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 It would be hard to imagine a wool uniform quite that vibrant!NY Mets at AtlantaWhen: 7:10 PM ET, Monday, June 30, 2014Where: Turner Field, Atlanta, GeorgiaSportsDirect Inc.After a strong road trip, the Atlanta Braves attempt to bring the success home with them as they open a three-game series against the New York Mets on Monday. Atlanta completed a four-game road sweep of Philadelphia a first for the Braves since 1964 to polish off an 8-3 trek and now plays six consecutive home games against the struggling Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks. New York has lost four of its last five contests.Mets star David Wright has missed three consecutive games with a bruised rotator cuff and will be re-examined on Monday. New York manager Terry Collins is mildly concerned, but he doesnt expect Wright to land on the disabled list after discussing the situation with team trainers. He could walk in (Monday), still have discomfort and need to rest if longer that could lead it in a different direction, Collins told reporters. Im not planning on that, for sure.TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), SportSouth (Atlanta)PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Zack Wheeler (3-8, 4.45 ERA) vs. Braves LH Alex Wood (6-6, 3.07)Wheelers up-and-down nature is personified by his last two outings. He looked splendid while tossing a three-hit shutout against Miami on June 19 before being torched for six runs and six hits in two innings against Oakland on Wednesday. Wheeler is 3-1 with a 3.94 ERA in five career starts against Atlanta, with both the loss and no-decision occurring in April.Wood returned to the majors and scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings against Houston on Wednesday. The 23-year-old began the season in the rotation and allowed six runs or fewer in six of his seven outings before being sent to the bullpen - and then down to the minors for two-plus weeks. Wood is 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA in three career starts against the Mets.WALK-OFFS: 1. Braves C Evan Gattis (back) will be re-evaluated on Monday after missing the last three games.2. Philadelphia OF Marlon Byrd, who homered twice on Sunday, is 4-for-10 against Wood, while SS Jimmy Rollins is hitless in 11 at-bats versus the left-hander.3. Atlanta 1B Freddie Freeman is 6-for-11 with a homer against Wheeler and RF Jason Heyward is 5-for-12 with a blast.

But some negro league uniforms were quite colorful, or garish, depending on your tastes, for the times. Those Royal Giants retros the Mets wore wouldn't look so out of place today, though. Well, maybe the top and bottom mono combo might be a bit harsh, but I'd say that every team except the Yankees wears brightly colored tops nowadays.

I don't need more than two seconds to identify an early 70's Pirate uniform, or a Pittsburgh Crawfords uniform. How much time do you need? An entire game?

Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 On the radio broadcast yesterday they were talking aboutthe Pirates being the first to abandon wool and go to the polyester and I think it's more vibrant than wool. I could be wrong, but that blue was pretty bright.

They wore a solid blue top only once or twice and it was years ago, while still at the old stadium.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 I like the blue uni's. I hope there's not anything wrong with that.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 David not with team in Atlanta. He decided he's tired of the lot of them and is taking a little R & R, screw you and your towels.(Actually: prescribed rest by club; will rejoin in NY on Friday to hopefully be the healthy firecracker the Mets need.)

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 d'Arnaud tried to keep our streak of dumb base-running moves alive, but Simmons at SS wouldn't let him.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 I thought it was 10 seconds. And this can be reviewed? Hmm. Yep, Murph got his heel off the bag.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 I think Shorty caught a break there. I thought they would say he took too long to come out. Nice.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 It's inning #6 and 'Operation Shutdown' is well underway.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Well, lets give Wood a little credit. Although I have no idea how Lagares just swung through that slider. Looked fat to me.

Nice.I think that kind of reversal is freakin' ridiculous regardless of when he challenged it.Whenever replay rules are proposed the selling point is always that it'll only be used to correct the obviously blown calls. But, inevitably, it winds up getting used for micro-dissecting plays that nobody thinks were wrong in the first place.

Now that one, that was tough to catch at real speed. And he was off the bag. This is no surprise to me in that they have been watching and talking about how review could effect the "after" slide. Not sure if it was during a steal or an extra base hit.Course I'm okay with it here because it went for us. If the runner was a Met I would be bitchin'.I tip my cap to Collins.
