Pail's Little League went to the Cyclones game last night, which turned out to be the season opener w/ Friday's rain.

Beat the SI MFYs 8-2. Player of the game was DH Tomas Nido, who had a couple of hits including an RBI triple. Nido I believe is also a catcher who was a high school draftee a year or two ago.

Newly drafted Mary Tyler Moore was the catcher, he did pretty well too with 2 hits. Really everyone did OK since the MFYs played very poorly -- errors, misplays, wild pitches, etc.

Zexy prospect Amed Roisario was at short. You can see why scouts like him, his body language at SS was very assured, made a really nice play on a hot one-hopper and initiated at least 2 DPs. He also dropped a pop fly in the 9th but I'll blame the wind on that. At the dish he walked once and scored. He's skinny but not shrimpy, could be a ballplayer at some point. I think he's 19 years old.

Third baseman was a guy I never heard of, Jhoan Urena, who had two hits. He's only 19 too.

Octvio Acosta started, did fine. Brandon Welch and lefty Shane Bay finished.

Shane Bay should be far away from Jamaica Bay by now. Dude first appeared in 2011, but can't seem to stay healthy or gain any roster traction or something. Dude totaled only 30 innings over his first three seasons.

Something I read recently named he and Rosario as "the players to watch" at Brooklyn this year.
Urena hit .300 (without much power) over 150-some ABs in the GCL last year as an 18 y/o

So we were at the Clones again last night, and just like the first game we saw Octavio Acosta pitch.

He gave up a monster HR off the scoreboard to Aberdeen's Alex "Robocop" Murphy in the first inning, but no hits and only two walks over the next six innings, with 7 K's.

Ediolgis Villasmil and Shane Bay finished up the combined 2-hitter.

Cyclones scratched out 2 in the fifth to take the lead on a couple of infield hits and a long double by Jhoan Urena, then tacked on 3 in the 8th. Mary Tyler Moore hit a triple, Michael "LOL" Katz had an RBI single. Amed Rosario singled and scored that inning, he is very fast. We won 5-1.

Game zipped by: In the 6th I checked up on the Mets and Wheeler was getting pinch-hit for. Games started at the same time.

I like to think that this is a result of some sort of top-down directive designed to train minor leaguers into NOT developing the kind of time-wasting, step-out/step-off habits that some of their prima donna ML cousins now display on a nightly basis ... but I suspect it's just a case of a quick game for no particular reason other than random chance.

The only, and I mean only, reason I adopted him was because of his name. Every family should have someone named Edioglis.

2 scoreless/hitless, but I wasn't really watching too closely to see how devastating he was.

Based on my limited sample of 2 games, Jhoan (produced yo-han) Urena and Rosario look like ballplayers.

Urena is a solidly built, squat kind of guy. Not as little as Ron Cey, but kinda short and thick, he drove the ball nicely between the outfielders, and looks like he's working hard (not great speed but good hustle on the bases and in the field. He played third, charged and barehanded a few for outs -- effort over natural grace.

Rosario is sort of the opposite: skinny but tall (6-2 maybe?), very fast and assured quickness in the field at SS.

Spent the afternoon at Coney Island and caught the first five innings of Cyclones/Ironbirds before heading home. The Ironbirds scored sixteen runs in the first five and won 18-2. The Cyclones had five errors but they could easily have been credited with at least eight (we saw three uncredited misplays just in the five innings). It was ugly.

'Clones outfielder Michael Comforto had his first homer last night. Walked twice and threw out a guy at home also. Hopefully there was no blocking-the-plate controversy.

Conforto's up to-- SSS!-- .352/.446/.500 over his first 15 games, and generally looking way too cool for low-A school.
