he's been effective in all categories except the BB/9 rate. But i don't think he can survive that in the majors.
Still, if his rate is going down and he's still putting up solid peripherals, there's hope for him yet.

He's kicking Jeff Walters' ass anyway.

I think we'll see a lot of Black nights in 2014.

Dykstra. Lutz. Teagarden. Allen.

Back-to-back-to-back-to-back jacks tonight. Vegas 6, Salt Lake 2, top of the 4th...

Can't get over how much fun it must be for Backman to fill out the lineup card right now. Oh, you took Flores? Well, he's like my seventh best hitter, even if I did have him batting third.

Five hits for Allen, Five RBI for Lutz. Four, um, strikeouts for Nieuwenhuis.

Sweeptastic fun last night

New York Mets DNP.

Las Vegas 51s 16, Salt Lake Bees 4

Binghamton Mets 12, Harrisburg Sentators 6

St. Lucie Mets 4, Palm Beach Cardinals 2

Savannah Sand Gnats 5, West Virginia Power 3

Watching the box scores, it seems the organization's teams are doing a good job scoring late. This should be the sort of benefit you get from being selective --- getting into the bullpen earlier and facing a lesser/tireder quality of pitcher in the late innings.

Brandon Allen (5-6, HR, 2 RBI) edges Jayce Boyd for Organizational Dude of the Day. Gavin Cecchini, who had just extended his hitting streak to 10 games, was pulled from the game early with an apparent knee injury. Look for LJ Mazzilli to get some time there. If he's disabled, that may mean the team launches the season of Ismaiel Tejerina a little early, or possibly the ballyhooed Amed Rosario.

51s fall behind 4-3 in the 10th, but then Tacoma switched Logans...

Pitching Change: Logan Bawcom replaces Logan Kensing.
  • =#0000FF]Omar Quintanilla strikes out swinging.
  • =#0000FF]Josh Satin singles on a ground ball to left fielder Xavier Avery.
  • =#0000FF]Allan Dykstra doubles (13) on a fly ball to center fielder Abraham Almonte. =#0000FF]Josh Satin scores.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner =#0000FF]Kirk Nieuwenhuis replaces =#0000FF]Allan Dykstra.
  • =#0000FF]Zach Lutz singles on a ground ball to left fielder Xavier Avery. =#0000FF]Kirk Nieuwenhuis scores.

MAYHEM ensues.

Dykstra's MVP tour: .317 / .464 / .615 // 1.079. That actually leaves him only fourth in OPS.

Shutout for Savannah. Miller Diaz advances to 5-0/1.45 through 37 IP. 44 SO and 16 BB. I'll buy that.

LJ Mazzilli clocked his fourth homer. Nimmo knocked one out for St. Loo, too.

Pitching for Las Vegas tonight, Montero left the game after throwing seven pitches. No reason available yet.
TDA hit his 4th home run since being sent down, and is hitting .417.

Omar Quintanilla threw a scoreless inning for Las Vegas the other night.
We always knew he hit like a pitcher.

I dunno.
College pick in 2012 (U Arkansas). Had a partial season in 2012 then his first full one in 2013 where his bat was nothing special [.225/.300/.335]. As such he wasn't mentioned prominently in pre-season prospect stuff but he was moving quickly up the ladder (low A in 2012, A+ and AA in 2013) and I think the reports on his glove are good.
Now his offense just seems to have exploded this year (well, not a lot of power but otherwise good -- .358/.425/.443) in AA & AAA. So while the track record isn't long, he's still only 23 and, if he can handle the position defensively, maybe there is reason to wonder if he's at least a piece of the future.

From what I've read he's a BABIP dependent singles hitter, and not great defensively, so I'd bet his future is as a utility guy.

Does anyone know what the likely pitching rotation for the B-Mets will be this weekend against Trenton?

Posted

If the rotation holds as it's currently going, you'll get Bowman/Peavey/Ynoa/Lara. You'll miss Steven Matz.

Thanks Edgy.

I know for sure that I'll be there on Saturday. The rest of the series is up for grabs.

Promotions and alterations and that rotation doesn't hold at all. But if you went last night, you saw domination from Greg Peavey: 8.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO. He's 8-1.

I did indeed. Even though the scoreboard said he was Bowman for the first inning.

It was a good showing by The Youth of America.

Last night's game was the opposite of a pitcher's duel. Gabriel Ynoa didn't impress, but Dilson Herrera hit a three run homer that contributed to a 10-7 B-Mets victory over the Trenton Thunder. The four-run top of the 7th took upwards of a half an hour to play - it was almost like they didn't want to get to the seventh inning stretch because they feared someone would kill the Queen. The oddest moment of the game, during that inning, involved Darrell Ceciliani being hit by a pitch twice in one at bat and then being thrown out of the game (he argued vehemently that he was hit the first time but the ump said no. Then he was drilled, and must have said something really choice to the umpire when he tossed his bat because the umpire ejected him immediately afterwards).

The fireworks on the field were followed by a fireworks display that was likely much better than the one we'll see at Citi Field this coming Saturday.

Montero dominated El Paso this evening, going 6 2/3 innings scoreless, giving up just three hits and two walks, while striking out six. Vegans lead 2-0 through seven.

Bingo over-ran Bowie, 9-4, as shorstop T.J. Rivera stroked three hits --- two of 'em doubles --- to raise his average to .349, that's after spending the first three months of the season hitting .341 in the Florida State League. Neither the power nor the plate discipline are particularly showing up, but it's hard to dislike the batting averages.

The lower levels were mostly disappointments this evening.

From a Q&A in Friday's BA:

Q: 2012 2nd rounder Matt Reynolds is hitting .338/.393/.510 in Las Vegas. If you were a betting man, would you wager that he's just another Las Vegas illusion or something more?

A (J.J. Cooper): Playing in Las Vegas does make it hard to judge stats. Reynolds .903 OPS actually ranks sixth among Las Vegas hitters with 100+ ABs.
Potentially a utility infielder at the big league level, but until the Mets do something about their hole at shortstop, that makes him a starting candidate in New York.

Strange one happening on Staten Island as the Cyclones and Baby Yanks go to extra innings tied 1-1. Michael Comforto has two hits and nailed a guy at the plate in the eighth. The lone Yankee run came through a Tyler Moore error and a wild pitch by Alberto Baldanado.

Really strange part is that Jhoan Urena was ejected before the game's first pitch.

Last time I looked (a few days ago) the top 5 teams in the organization were a cumulative 100 games over .500.
That's a mixed blessing. It speaks well for the organization. But, unlike in some prior years, I don't think too many players will be brought up one level for the playoffs because their team is participating in their own playoffs. And I don't see too many Las Vegas players being brought up to the majors until their playoff season is over.

I wouldn't think of it as a mixed blessing, but a blessing.

I mean, the 51s were in the playoffs last year. Good.

PCL semi-finals, Game 1: Las Vegas 5 - Salt Lake City 4
Rafael Montero - 4.1 IP, 3 runs, 7 Hits, 4 BBs
Gonzalez Germen - Save - 1 perfect inning
RBIs: Cory Vaughn (HR), LJ Mazzilli, Cesar Puello, Kevin Plawecki, Brandon Allen

AA Eastern League semi-finals, Game 1: Binghamton 8 - Portland 5
Bingo scored 3 in the 8th, then 3 more in the 9th on a TJ Rivera walk-off 3R HR

So Atl Lg semi-finals, Game 1: Ashville 8 - Savannah 3
Not a good night for Sand Gnat pitchers Robert Gsellman (5 runs over 5) or Paul Paez 3 earned over 1/3)
12 hits for Savannah but 10 singles = only 3 runs.

PCL - Reno ties up the series 1-1 thanks to a 1st inning GS by Mike Jacobs ... yes, that one!

Eastern Lg -- Portland also ties up the series 1-1 via a 7-0 shutout

No Sally Lg games last night
