I don't know if spring training guys get "Memories of..." threads, but apparently he exercised his option for free agency after being told he wouldn't make the team out of camp.

Just as well as far as I'm concerned.
I try not to expend too much energy 'hating' players elsewhere in MLB - but, even within the subset of Neanderthal relievers, Farnsworth always struck me as one of the bigger meatheads out there.

Humorist Will Rogers once said that he never met a man he didn't like.
He would have punched Farnsworth in the mouth.

I think they're trying to re-do his deal as a minor league thingy.

Rubin reports such a deal is done. Farnsworth will be a Vegan of the Las variety.

Just a guess: Shayla Farnsworth's okay with a temporary move to Vegas.

Farnsworth officially back in whatever fold he was reported coming back to.

He pitched the last inning of today's game. He gave up a run on a wild pitch.
The camera followed him after the third out and we heard him say "fuck!" LOUD AND CLEAR in a closeup. I hope the kiddies weren't home from school yet.

Indeed. Imagine how many children would ask in horror, "Mommy, what's that goddamn Kyle Farnsworth still doing on the Mets?"

We're all going to be asking this in about 5 years aren't we?

ROFL - It's how I would pose the question, but my kid is more diplomatic than I am

He's awful.

I suspect he's here only until de Groom or Montero clear their arbitration milestone?

Posted

1) There is no "arbitration milestone", not a specific one anyway. At best it's an estimate that hovers around the late May/early June time frame but even that only matters if the player you bring up stays up continually for at least three seasons.

2) I don't think Montero, or even more so with DeGrom, are the type of players you worry about what they may or may not be getting paid three years down the line, particularly if they're going to start out (and maybe continue as) relievers. IOW, I don't think mgmt is sitting around just waiting for the passing of some non-specific date. There's even talk that Montero might bump Mejia as soon as his next start.

3) Even if reinforcements are coming I don't know that Farnie here is automatically the first one getting tossed overboard. He's mis-cast as a closer but so is everyone on the staff right now along with everyone they're likely to bring up.

Who do you think would be the first one out?

Personally, I have less faith in Valverde than Farnsworth.

Beyond that a lot depends on what they do with Mejia.
- Is he going to be demoted from the rotation to the pen, or to AAA, or not at all?
- If so, does his replacement come from Vegas or from Dice-K?
- Are they even willing to consider Montero and/or DeGrom as relievers?
- At some point I'm sure they'd like to get a second LHP up here
- Will Black or Thorton or someone else currently in Vegas get their act in gear? Black's been better lately - which means he's only walking Half the ballpark.

And now Valverde goes matching Farnsworth by allowing 9th inning run(s?) after starting with 2-out/none-on.

oe: and if nothing else, I'm reminded while sitting here watching Valverde that he doesn't have any kind of swing and miss stuff.
At least Farnsworth can be counted on the occasional K in between hits allowed/ But Valverde's problem is that the hitters keep fouling stuff off all day long off him to where they're almost certain to find something they like eventually or at least run up his pitch count and shorten his outing if they don't.

This whole team is ugly and broken
Nobody picks the next guy up, no sins go unpunished. Will be a very long year if these things don't get a lot better.

Cold Mets released him days ahead of the deadline by which they'd be on the hook to pay him all year.

I was just reporting what I heard on tv. What
was bitter about it? It was expected.

That the release came despite his being one of the more nominally effective Met relievers this year (read: lucky 3.18 ERA).
