Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 In seeking the fattest Met ever, we're up against some challenging facts. Few are honest, and little changes. If your 1971 baseball card says you're 195, it's a pretty safe bet that your 1988 card says the same. So, stipulating that (1) official weights are mostly lies, and (2) they rarely if ever change during a player's career, let's acknowledge that they're all we have and hope against hope that the degree of error is the same for everybody, and look at the BMIs of some notably chunky monkeys from Mets history.MetHeightWeightBMICategoryBartolo Colon5'11"26537Morbidly ObeseMo Vaughn6'1"26836Morbidly ObeseButch Huskey6'3"24430OverweightBenny Agbayani6'0"22530OverweightSid Fernandez6'1"22029OverweightRamon Castro6'3"23529OverweightRusty Staub6'2"21528OverweightMickey Lollich6'1"17022Normal WeightAll weights from UMDB, except Colon's, from baseball-reference.Man, I'm fat.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 That 170 for Lolich is legendarily nutty.
dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 How about Juan Berenguer, at a willowy 5'11", 215? I think he got fatter after the Mets, though, like Kevin Mitchell.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 12, 2013 Author Posted December 12, 2013 There are two Juans. Baseball-reference seems to have seen a slimmer man play than UMDB did.MetHeightWeightBMICategorybb-ref Juan Berenguer5'11"18625.9OverweightUMDB Juan Berenguer5'11"21530Obese

That was either his weight on the day he was originally signed, or he just had one foot on the scale.Later
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 If Lolich was 170 pounds, I'm George Clooney.
dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Maybe the scale was in kilograms and they forgot to convert. An honest mistake.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I thought this was for CPF members...
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I think the 170 was Lolich's birth weight.
Guest Mets Guy in Michigan Guests Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Lolich ran a donut shop southeast of Flint. Unlike that listed weight, that's a true story!
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 That's 170 pounds of donuts right there.
