It's only partly for on-field reasons, but the more I think about this, the more I smile.

Even then I'm not convinced.

well not everyone, the Mets are probably better than the Marlins and Phillies already.

I'm not sure what folks are asking for, but your team is a contender.

Yeah, plenty has to go right. That's always true.

Like I said in the other thread, he has ace upside, and I think that justifies the risks.

See, the thing is, he probably won't be an ace-- his ERA had a little bit more than a little luck in there (career-high strand rate, low HR/FB rate). But he'll-- barring significant time missed with injuries, or choking on his toilet-break meal-- likely give us somewhere between 140 and 180 innings of 6-7 inning starts and an ERA in the mid-to-high 3s. And if he gives us that and ANYTHING in the second year, then he's earned the contract value and then some.

It's official.

Mets press release wrote:
The New York Mets today announced the club has signed righthanded pitcher Bartolo Colon to a two-year contract.

Colon, 40, is a three-time All-Star, including last season and the 2005 American League Cy Young winner. He has won double-digit games 10 times during his 16-year major league career with the Cleveland Indians, Montreal Expos, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics.

The 5-11, 265-pounder made 30 starts in 2013 and finished second in the AL in wins (18), ERA (2.65) and walks per nine innings (1.37). He was tied for the major league lead with three shutouts and was tied for third in the AL with three complete games. He worked 6.0 or more innings in 24 of his 30 starts, going 18-1 in those games. He surrendered two or fewer runs 20 times while issuing one or no walks 23 times. Colon finished sixth in the AL Cy Young voting.

John Dewan sings of Bartolo.

Colon may be the most fascinating case. In his prime, Colon was an elite pitcher with tremendous stuff. Now, he is in his 40s and averages less than 90 mph on his fastball. However, rather than shy away from his diminished fastball, Colon has relied on the pitch more and more. In 2013, he threw it 86 percent of the time. Despite the frequency and slowness of the pitch, Colon enjoyed the best ERA of his career.

... and now he's hitting.

Yeah, now that he's in the National League, he'll have 'plate appearances' that aren't 'all you can eat'.

Because when Bartolo sits down to a meal, the previously covered plate appears rather quickly.
