Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Amazin' Avenue looks at Lord Buck vs. Vicomte D'Arnaud exclusively with regard to the nebulous but real virtue of pitch-framing, does a great job clearing up the ambiguity, and suggests (perhaps over-zealously) that we may gain as many as five wins on pitch-framing alone.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 This framing stuff is fascinating. I need to read up some more on the stats.Quantifying it of course is still way up in the air, so 5 WAR might be a bit much, but damn..if he can hit a little having a good framer is a big deal. And hell, Wheeler is still a little wild at time. But if his strike zone is bigger with d'Arnaud (hmm..Wheeler DID get better later in the season..) and Gee is a control/corners guy anyway..hell, even a little offense goes a long way if d'Arnaud can improve what was already a pretty good rotation.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 2, 2013 Author Posted October 2, 2013 Yeah, I try and get across that much of it may be pie in the sky, but it's five wins, not five WAR, as they're not comparing him to a theoretical replacement, but to John Buck himself.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 2, 2013 Author Posted October 2, 2013 Jose indeed.Very impressed that folks have taken steps toward measuring this.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Just the way d' is so quiet with his glove makes a big difference. Buck is moving his glove all over the place before the pitch. d' just puts his glove there and lets the ball find its way to him. If the pitch is executed correctly his glove barely moves.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 2, 2013 Author Posted October 2, 2013 It also explains a lot of the benefit to setting up at the bottom of the strikezone in the Pena style.
