I've been seen articles about this, squeaky bum time here and the Mets winning games might or might not be a good thing....right now the Mets have the 11th "best" record in baseball....the worst place to be says Megdal, losing last night left them where?

Why does Megdal care, I'm sure he believes the Mets aren't going to buy any free agents anyway.

Protected pick would be nice, but if we lose out on an 11th or 12th draft pick that may have an impact on 2017 and beyond it's not going to make or break anything.

Mets win and lose the protected draft pick

Megdal: "Leave it to the Mets to show some spirit and ability and win only when it would undermine their position."

Seriously, do we have to encourage this shit? We've had more to offer than this guy does on his best day.

You know, I knew when I posted the link it would become about Megdal, last time I do that. It is rather annoying that he gets under your skin so easily, yes, you and Ceetar have a lot more to offer than that, yet you both get hung up on him.


ON EDIT - Annoying is the wrong word there, frustrating I think is what I am looking for.

Mets probably don't win out anyway, how about I root for the other teams to win all their games instead of the Mets to lose?

The other thing is that only a handful of FAs these days even qualify for compensation -- five or six last year maybe? -- so some folks are talking about tanking the end of a season in order to solve a "problem" that may not even exist.
It's not like the old rules when every situational reliever (Feliciano) would net his old team a draft pick and sometimes several.

And I'm certainly not overly concerned about whether the Mets pick 10th or 12th.

Sorry to be predictable.

I think the guy is a sincere fan in his own way, but he's running a dishonest crusade and that just degrades the whole culture. The one good thing we can find in the media an honest way to talk to each other and then this fake journalist comes and in that just goes out the window as a reasonable value. Most people feel no better about Francessa for instance.

The Mets finish with 74 wins. So did the Brewers. The Phillies can get to 74 if they win today's game. I count 19 teams that have 75 or more. It can become 20 if the Blue Jays win their game today.

So the best the Mets can finish is tied for 20th place overall. And they could end in a two-, three-, or four-way tie for 21st.

If I understand correctly, they've finished poorly enough that they won't lose a draft pick if they sign a type A free agent. Do I have that right?

Phillies are losing 10 to 5 in the 7th in Atlanta. If they win, it's a four-way tie at 74 wins. If they lose, the Mets clinch third place.

Not sure how ties are broken in these deals.
It may revert back to the previous year: IOW, the better draft slot among the theoretical four teams tied would be given to the team that finished worst in the previous season and so on.

And it's not that those teams finishing in 21st to 30th place among the entire MLB don't lose a draft pick it's that they'll have their 1st round pick protected and would instead lose their 2nd round pick if/when they signed one of the most elite variety of FA

The Mets will pick [u:32pn7vnq]10th[/u:32pn7vnq] in next June's amateur draft - and therefore [u:32pn7vnq]will[/u:32pn7vnq] be protected from losing their 1st round pick if they should happen to sign a qualifying Free Agent.
They would lose their 2nd round pick instead which, once the compensation picks are tossed in, will probably be in the low 50s somewhere.

With the 8th overall pick, the Mets selected Kirk Presley in 1993.

With the 12th overall pick, the Mets selected Gavin Cecchini in 2012 and Lastings Milledge in 2003.
