St. Lucie Mets catcher in jail on $40,000 bond

PORT ST. LUCIE � St. Lucie Mets baseball player Alex Romero Machillanda is charged with shoplifting and allegedly throwing a Bealls Department Store official to the ground while fleeing and resisting arrest, according to police reports and a spokesman.

He�s a catcher for the Gulf Coast League team for the New York Mets.

�We are aware (of the arrest) but because it is a legal matter we cannot comment,� said Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz.

Police quoted store officials as saying they saw him remove price tags from clothing and conceal them in his backpack before leaving the store around 6 p.m. Sunday.

�When a store loss prevention officer attempted to stop Machillanda for not paying for the clothes, (he) punched the .....officer and took him to the ground, slamming his head on the concrete,� according to police reports.

Officers arrived in time to capture him, still �he resisted by yelling and pulling away from the officers,� the reports said.

Machillanda, of the 8500 block of Champions Way, Port St. Lucie, was charged with felony shoplighting, resisting a merchant, battery and resisting an officer without violence.

Police officials said stolen clothing found in his backpack was returned to the store in the 1700 block of Northwest St. Lucie Boulevard.

He is in the St. Lucie County Jail is lieu of a $40,000 bail.
