Cliff Corcoran pens this little snipe as he breaks down today's game:

Padres @ Mets, 1:10 pm, Edinson Volquez vs. Jonathon Niese

These two teams had similar records in 2012, the Padres winning 76 games and the Mets 74, but they seem to be headed in opposite directions. New York, despite its smart new front office and David Wrights massive new extension, continues to drift toward oblivion. San Diego, however, has some compelling young talent, including first baseman Yonder Alonso (26 next Monday), centerfielder Cameron Maybin (26 on Thursday) and rookie infielder Jedd Gyorko (24), that has many in the sabermetric community touting them as a near-future contender.

Drift toward oblivion? Huh? Does he not know about Harvey, Wheeler, d'Arnouldt and the rest of our young studs as we turn the corner toward respectability?

The Cubs, Astros and Marlins are drifting toward oblivion.

New front office? , not to mention the young guys MGIM named.

what an asshole, snark for snarks sake as Edgy might say.

The guys he mentioned for the Padres as up-and-comers -- Cameron Maybin is one his third team at age 26, after the Tigers and Marlins gave up on him. He was a stud here when he played for the Whitecaps, but that was A-ball. He's got a career .240 stick and no power.

Or about two weeks younger than Ike Davis, with about one-fourth the career WAR (as the sabermetric community might say).

...Cameron Maybin (26 on Thursday)

Now 450 games into his career, a career in which he's consistently hit like a bench player.

Jedd Gyorko (24)

A consistent minor-league hitter, in western leagues where that's not purchased at so dear a price. He was Baseball America's 98th best prospect before 2012 and their 71st best this preseason, behind three Met prospects.

So yeah, I guess, they could be a near future contender. So could a lot of teams. But you sure do a lazy man's job making the case. And that's the problem with this. It's just so lazy.

They're gradually turning from a sports magazine that also does swimwear to a swimwear magazine that also does sports. (And that Brian Cole story gives me little hope that I'm wrong.) The sad part is that one of the things that they're out there trying to get a handle on is the fantasy sports culture --- publishing like three or four fantasy guides a year for football alone. This ignorance is unforgivable to the "sabermetric community" and presumably useless to the fantasizers.

I pretty much equate them with ESPN in terms of quality. i.e. my thoughts on this were "Yawn, another haphazardly thrown together sports article? No surprise there." Of course, you haven't seen Time Out New York's. (I took photos, I can share tomorrow)

Please forgive the writer. He's off to cover the Underwater Pretzel Throw in Provo, Utah, or a yacht race somewhere. Maybe someday he'll be assigned to see an actual baseball game.
